Please Chance Me For Business Schools

Hey everyone,

I'm a rising senior and have begun my college search. I'm interested in business and plan on majoring in accounting. Currently I've been taking a look at bloomsberg business week undergraduate business school rankings. My question for you guys is what do think are schools I would have a shot at getting into in the top 30 or so they rank?

I have taken honors in English and history and college prep in science and math for my freshman-junior years. I have taken intro to accounting, business law, and personal finance as business courses. I will be taking AB Calculus, AP Econ, AP Gov, and advanced accounting this fall.

Currently I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and rank in the top 3% of my class. My sat score is a 2150. Math: 690 Reading: 700 Writing: 760

I plan on taking the SAT one last time in October.

Extra Curricular Activities:
Key Club- About 4 hours of volunteer work per month
National Honors Society - Weekly tutoring
Future Business Leaders of America - Will be treasurer of club this year and qualified for state competition in personal finance
Track and field - Competed at districts for all three years and have received a letter
Fitness Team - Club that I participate in over the winter to get in shape for spring track
Winter Track Club - Participate in indoor track meets to prepare for spring
KFC - Have worked there for the past two summers
Church Youth Group - Various monthly activities
Young Republicans - attend weekly meetings
Church volunteering as an usher or acolyte
People to People program - went on a trips to Alaska and England/Scotland

Achievements:
Nominated as one of the top ten writers in my school
Have created a few successful YouTube videos on technology received views between 500,000-250,000 and have about 3,800 subscribers
Built my own computer (may not really be an achievement but something that I worked really hard at, experienced a lot of failures when building it, but end result was amazing, might use for an essay topic)
4.0 GPA award freshman-junior year

Here are the schools I have visited so far:
Ohio State
Penn State
University of Indiana
Texas Christian University
Elon University
University of Richmond
James Madison University
Virginia Tech
Miami of Ohio

I feel like I have a decent shot all these schools and are fairly realistic. Do you guys think I have a shot at maybe some of the more competitive business schools I haven't visited?

Thanks for your input

I’m not gonna bother chancing you for all those schools only because I personally think you can do a whole lot better.
Babson, Stern (nyu), Ross (umich), UVA (darden or mcintire - one of them is ugrad), UCLA, USC, UCB

The schools above are mainly high matches… but for any of them, I’d suggest you get a higher math SAT score. Business school look for students with strong math scores, I think you should try to improve it to over 750.

youre doing great, mcdonagh in georgetown is pretty good too

Indiana University (not University of Indiana, I think you meant IU since IU has the Kelley BS which is top 15) would be a great safety/financial safety for you.

I guess it depends on budget? You have a great resume and application, but it comes down to budget and region essentially. You have your elite schools like Stern (which you have a nice shot at), and your expensive Northeast business centered schools like Babson, but both are very costly.

Your list is great for safeties! But you can probably aim higher depending on budget/if you research merit scholarships you may be eligible for.

I can’t find a common thread to your list of schools. Indiana, Richmond and Penn State are very well-regarded and I’d definitely keep them on your list then pick two of your others that you consider safeties. I agree with killforstern, you’re in a place where you can aim a little higher. That said, every school on his suggested list will be a bit of a reach. I’d pick a couple from that list and add them to your current prospects (Note: UCLA does not have an undergrad BSchool). Also, realize that the OOS public flagships are likely to be pretty stingy with fin aid, with most of it being in the form of loans. The one possible exception might be Indiana.

A math SAT over 700 would go a long way to improving your chances.

Thanks for the reply everyone. I hope to improve my math score to above 700 but 750 might be a bit of stretch for me. I plan on getting the pwn the sat math guide as that seems to be highly recommenced around here. I still have plenty of time to study though, about 3 months.

Vinceh and others, just wondering what you thought of my course selection. I know its not the most rigorous with two CP and two honors? Would that prevent me from some of these more difficult schools even with higher test scores?

I did mean Indiana University thanks Coste.

I wouldn’t say that budget is a huge factor for my parents. Luckily, they started saving before I was born. However, any scholarships I receive could definitely be a deciding factor. I know for example at Ohio State if I raise my sat reading/math to 1420 I would receive $5,000/yr for the maximum scholarship and $12,000/yr for the national buckeye.

Thanks vitalik1 and killforstern for suggestions. I’ll definitely look into those schools. Also just wondering if any of you though I would have a chance at University of Texas out of state? I know only like 5-7% applicants from out of state get in.
