Volunteer Teacher for the Assisting Individuals in Need in Taiwan(11)
-Spent approximately one month in a rural area in Taiwan, teaching underprivileged students ESL (3rd-5th graders), designing lesson plans, giving lesson demonstrations to a committee, and we lived in the school’s small library while we were there. No AC, internet, but there was still electricity

-We must apply through a competitive process which includes resumes, essays, etc to be sent off, and about 400 applicants are accepted out of roughly 1500 from across the globe.
-All travel expenses to and from Taiwan must be paid by ourselves, but transport to the school and food are paid by the program.
-Spent about a week training at a youth center in Taipei, followed by traveling to our assigned schools to begin teaching.
-~100 hours

Volunteer at Local Church’s ESL Program(9,10,11,12)
-Work about three hours every Sunday at the church.
-We teach ESL to students who are generally first generation immigrants, mostly adults in their upper 40’s-60’s.
-Since a good portion of the students are from China or Taiwan, a background in Mandarin is greatly appreciated amongst volunteers, as we can occasionally help translate.
-Organize a World Fair at the end of each year, where the students are able to showcase their home country’s culture while utilizing the English they learned through the year. Includes food, posters, and a cultural showcase on stage (traditional dances, poetry, etc,)

First, congratulations on your superb record of achievement! I am no expert but I’d say your chances are very strong for JHU, Rice, Emory, Duke, and Baylor. Ivies, Stanford, and U Chicago are never guaranteed, no matter how great you look on paper, because there are so many qualified applicants.

Good luck!
