• Community Service through St John, volunteering at twinkle child foundation, and volunteer for street collections.

Other extra-curricular activities

• Amnesty International group. Currently I am part of the sub-group, and we are running a petition against women rape and violence around the world.
• Headmaster’s Welfare Committee. As a committee we run the red nose day at AGS, go to low decile schools and provide free ‘mentoring’ and we also help both international students feel comfortable in AGS.

• Auckland Grammar School B-Grade chess team (and finalist).
• Year 9 and year 10, school Junior Chess champion.

Academic Skills

• Experience in programming with BASCOM AVR and ROBOTC.
• Gained valuable practical experimentation skills through NZYPT.
• Programming skills through NZPC competition.
• Experience in preparation of Business Plans and financial reports through YES.
• Experience in using XERO accounting software for young enterprise.
• Developed Leadership and communication skills through St John program.

Community Work through St John and enrichment (7 years): During the duration of the course, I spent 2-3 hours per week helping the elderly. Through my work at these rest homes, I learnt valuable skills in communicating with disabled elderly. As a gold group cadet, some of the responsibilities that I hold include taking care of the younger aged groups and teaching them some courses. Currently I am working towards my Grand Prior.

Tutoring Program at School: I tutor 2 hours per week for plus another 2 hours as part of the Welfare committee free tutoring service, which involves tutoring a boy Accounting, Biology and Maths. Through this tutoring service I have learnt to communicate with other boys with different academic ability, and also learnt ways to teach and understand their problems.

Finance Director of YES Company (Ghost): Our Company was called Ghost, and we designed a portable USB powered cup-warmer (which when connected to the USB port on the computer would keep your drink warm). As finance director I prepared all business plans, and financial statements. Through this role, I learnt ways to prepare business plans, and also use Xero accounting software. During the YES year, we had to pitch to a real investor, which gave me the experience to experience a real business environment.

Habitat for Humanity: This is a hand on job, where I am a volunteer. We have to go on Saturdays and help build houses. This was an amazing experience because it gave me a chance to build homes for the homeless, not by providing a gold coin, but physically building a home. This enriched me with many skills in building, and also provided me with an opportunity to help the local community.
Interests

My main selling pointL: I like to create and start new things: Robotics club at my school and my own business (overseas imports).

WILL CHANCE BACK!

How do you have a 4.0 GPA if you have a 77 and 83 in english, in fact, you also have A-'s in all your AS level classes, by my calculation, your GPA is actually a 3.6

International + Aid is a killer. Listen to what bwild999 said, and also, I feel a lot of you’re ECs aren’t ones you would write on the CommonApp. Like programming for fun isn’t one, nor is the gold level badges as far as I can tell. Columbia ED will help you, but needing aid will counteract that. Have you applied to any matches/safeties?

Columbia: Reach
MIT: High Reach
Caltech: High Reach
Princeton: High Reach
Swarthmore: Reach
HMC: Reach
UPenn: Reach
Stanford: High Reach
Dartmouth: Low Reach
Duke: Reach
Being an international applicant and asking for aid is very unhelpful to your application for most of these colleges, since only 6 US universities (as far as I know) are need-blind to internationals. Also, your English scores seem pretty low, but your other test scores are excellent. I would find some matches and safeties as well. Good luck!
Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1499593-chances-ivies-other-great-schools.html</a></p>

You’re an international. Start looking into full-ride merit-based scholarships. That will take care of that. Duke, for example, has a ton: [Duke Financial Aid: Grants & Scholarships](http://www.finaid.duke.edu/undergraduate/prospectives/aidtypes/grants.html)

Also Gates Millenium, Jefferson, etc.

Yes, you can mention gold badges and programming on the CommonApp.

^ You can’t apply for the Gates Millennium Scholarship if your an international student.

Ah. Noted.

Since I am doing A levels our GPA is calculated on a different scale than the American system. Here the GPA is 4.0, and calculated from a school counsellor.

Since all these schools are very competitive in terms of admission it’s hard to chance people for them but it should be noted that you are a very strong candidate and have good chances at all these schools. I’d put my money on you getting into at least one of them.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1511283-chances-sewanee-university-south.html</a></p>

I can’t speak for the others, but MIT is need-blind, even for internationals: they don’t look at financial need until after they decide to accept you. They really look for how much you care, and based on what you said, you REALLY care. Just write essays that really capture you and get some excellent recommendations, and you should stand an above-average chance. While you may not be able to put those ECs on the Common App, MIT has its own, much more flexible application. Good luck!

Chance back?

Okay, dude, you don’t need this chance thread. You have IMPECCABLE stats and ECs, so you have a strong chance at ANY school. Make sure you have enough safeties and matches under your belt (Harvey Mudd: low match), but honestly, apply to as many reaches as you like; you’ll get into at LEAST one, I promise.

Good luck! :)
