I’m surprised how pessimistic some of the other posters have been, you have great ECs, a good GPA, and only slightly low test scores for these schools.

I think you have decent chances, but based on being deferred from Rice I would suggest having some more safeties and/or matches. However, ignoring that I would say you were a prime candidate.

I will chance you all in the morning! I’d also like to say that Rice deferred 130/1300 so they’re a little more picky about it than elsewhere. Thanks for the input everyone!

I am scratching my head and wonder why you were not accepted at Rice. I also agree that some of the other posters are very pessimistic. You seem to have a solid foundation and passion for what you seek. One thing I wasn’t clear on is how rigorous was your curriculum- if not as rigorous as it can be, then perhaps that’s why you were deferred? Who really knows. As a parent of a son who is also applying to many of the same schools, I wish you good luck.

@PsychoDad10 I have taken 4 AP classes and I’m in 6 for my senior year. The rest were all honors engineering courses( I wanted to study engineering before) and technology classes. 4 years of foreign language, music courses, and standard required classes. Good luck to your son!

I don’t know why people are rating your chances at Rice and Duke as being so low. I think you have a decent chance at both schools. You are in the middle 50% of ACT scores, and you have excellent extracurriculars. Remember that just because a person has a lot of extracurriculars, doesn’t mean a college will be impressed. The more extracurriculars you do, the less time you can spend on each. So don’t be too worried.

I’m also confused. You look great on paper! Your commitment and passion is clear but you still have the diversity in your ECs to be good candidate for a Liberal Arts school. I don’t know much about any of these schools but from what little I do know I would say only Cornell is a high reach. Duke is also a reach and all the others I think are reach to low reach.
