Please chance me for University of Pennsylvania, early decission

Im highly interested in Penn, and have decided that I will apply there early. I will possibly attempt to apply to the huntsman program, but will most likely apply for an economics major at the college.

Transcript:

Weighted GPA 3.93, school doesnt rank or report unweighted so i dont know about that
I will have 9 Honors classes, and 11 AP classes, including both AP French and the prototype AP Russian.

However, I have more than a few B's, which has brought my GPA down significantly.

Tests-
SAT, I only took it once so far, got a 2260 (800W, 760M, 700CR)
World History SAT II-730
PSAT-224, though the cutoff is unreleased, i think thats good for semifinals
AP World History - 5
AP French - 5
Will have also taken the AP US History, English Lang, English Lit, Russian, AB Calc, BC Calc, Physics C, Macro/Micro Economics, Comparative Gov't, US Gov't, by the end of senior year

EC's

I have volunteered over 100 hrs at a major performing arts center in my area (JFK center for performing arts) the first high school student to ever volunteer for them. I translated their tour into french and russian, and designed their first ever tour geared specifically towards children, among many other things.

Going to volunteer in england and russia this summer, as my interests lie in international affairs and I want to experience working in other countries.

Im really culturally diverse and quirky, so I think my essays will convey my individuality very well. My recs should also be good, coming from teachers that I worked closely and well with.

THats All! :)

I’d say you have a decent shot… Pretty good stats and okay extracurriculars… Good luck!

Unwerighted GPA will probably be your biggest problem. Your school not reporting it wont stop a college from asking you for it or calculate it themselves.

It is a pretty simple equation - If you have 5 Bs and 25 As it goes ((5x3) + (25 x4))/30 = 3.8333.

I think you have a really good shot, but I don’t know much about UPenn.
What’s your intended major?

Thanks for replying! I intend to major in Economics, with a possible minor in international affairs.

as I calculated, my unweighted GPA is 3.5… Did my chances just die? Can I make up for my losses?

Conveying your interest in economics and international affairs through ECs/Community Service could probably strength your chances.

I don’t think a GPA can make or break you, though a lower GPA obviously equals higher reach.

suggestions/ideas/opinions for me?

Hummm… So you have 7 Honors Awards as a senior, and yet you’re a Junior? A little presumptive, aren’t you?

I don’t know if you’re from Washington DC, but if you’re talking about the Kennedy Center in DC, that’s is a good EC, especially to use your skills in French and Russian. But, your gpa is a bit low. You probably won’t get in Huntsman, and even A&S is a stretch. ED is often reserved for legacy, and “special admits”. But it’s your best shot. Go for it.

3.5? Ouch… Your chances didn’t die, but it’s definitely going to be a lot harder to get in… :/

yeah in hindsight that was foolish to predict 12th grade, but then again, I’m very sure about all of the honors and classes that I predicted, so I don’t take it back. I have all the necessary qualifications for these honor societies, so I just need to apply, and then i’ll be good. Thanks for posting.

also yes, it’s the kennedy center in DC, I live in northern virginia

*bump…

Penn cares about rank more than any school I know. Whether your high school ranks or not, they will give enough grade distribution info to know where you rank.

In all honesty Huntsman is out of reach, but if you’re under top 10% in your class, apply to CAS. Try to raise the CR score too.

You have great extracurriculars but your grades and scores are on the low side for Penn, especially given how much they care about rank. CAS isn’t entirely out of your reach, but be prepared with safety schools.

Take a look at Penn’s Common Data Set, page 13.
http://www.upenn.edu/ir/Common%20Data%20Set/UPenn%20Common%20Data%20Set%202010-11.pdf</a>
97% of accepted students were in the top 10% of high school graduating class.

So looking at my extracurricular activities, awards, language skills, and taking into account that my essays will most likely be quite good, do i overcome the 3.5 gpa setback?

No…

well that’s a very disconcerting response… anyone else? please be honest, do i stand a chance?

For Huntsman, it’s probably a straight up no; they take ~30 from the US (the other half come form abroad), and most of them have a combination of ridiculous academic credentials/EC’s that clearly reflect their desire to enter Huntsman/random hooks such as legacy or URM. As to CAS, however, you have better chances, as your EC’s are strong, as is actually your SAT (beyond ~2200 you’re basically set, save maybe against a 2400). Only your GPA needs to be brought up somewhat, and you’re actually probably golden for UPenn CAS assuming you apply ED.

Hello! I applied ED to Penn last year and will be attending this fall
Yes, your GPA might hurt you (for Penn, transcript > test scores), but that doesn’t mean you have no chance at getting in. I actually think you have a good chance of getting in ED to CAS.
Spend some quality time on your “Why Penn?” essay…it is EXTREMELY important for ED candidates. Write about why you love Penn (of course), why Penn should choose you, and about what you can bring to the Penn community :)
