Please chance me! I'll chance back (NYU, USC, UND, Emory, Vandy, UofM, BC)

I'm a rising senior from a private Catholic high school in Ohio looking for a fairly realistic assessment from anybody who's willing. Once again, I'll chance back!

GPA: 3.8 UW/4.3 W
SAT Superscored: 2180; 1430 M+R
ECs:
- Co-founder and leader (CEO?) of non-profit organization that focuses on micro-financing (I wrote my Common App essay on this)
- 4-year participant in Mock Trial (won Best Attorney award twice)
- Yearbook Editor-in Chief
- Varsity tennis player (4 years)
- Work as an associate for Panera Bread (I worked during summer and the school year)
- Editor for school newspaper
- Contributor to school's annual poetry magazine
- Founder and co-President of Linguistics Club (I also taught myself French and focused on internationalism in my essays so this isn't an isolated resume-padder)
- VP of NHS
- Treasurer of Spanish NHS

Service
- Roughly 75 hours with the Cleveland Clinic
- Served as a moderator and judge for spelling/geography/math bee for kids for 4 years (the planning and partcipation over all years totals to around 100 hours)

I am Commended for the PSAT and have the usual High Honors Award for an above 3.5 GPA for all three years. I'm also an IB student for what it's worth!

Intended Major: Business-related

Applying to:
University of Notre Dame
Vanderbilt University
University of Southern California
Emory University
New York University
Boston College
University of Michigan

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! I know some of these colleges are really tough to get accepted to and I try to be realistic about my chances, but I think I would have a better idea given some input from you guys.

Also, there are several kids from my school applying to USC and UND (I got to a Catholic school so no surprise there). I'm just adding that in case it affects things in any way.

Wow! I’m impressed. You will definitely get into U of M. That’s were I applied as well. I also applied to Notre Dame and I think you have a great chance of getting in. Vanderbilt is a toss up because they have so many applicants. I also think that you will get into Boston for sure. Those are the colleges I have experience with

I’d say for both Vanderbilt is the only one that’s iffy, because it’s hard for anyone to get into. Notre Dame and Emory aren’t guarenteed but you def have a good shot, and everything else you have a really good cance of getting into.

good list of schools, might also look at Holy Cross-top Catholic school. HC is like a smaller version of ND. Holy Cross has nice campus 1 hour from Boston and meets 100% demonstrated financial need.

Thanks for all of the responses so far! If you guys have chance threads of your own that you want me to comment on feel free to share them.

Any more answers would be appreciated, especially if someone has more insight into USC, which seems to be getting more and more top-tier applicants each year (including this year if all these CC posts are any indication).

Giving this post a bump

University of Notre Dame- reach
Vanderbilt University- sorta a reach
University of Southern California
Emory University- likely
New York University- likely
Boston College- possible
University of Michigan- possible

Thanks!

I was a bit confused by the use of “possible” since that seems to imply a status as a reach (which, if that’s what you meant, is totally fine).

Bump!

I think Emory and University of Michigan are good matches/high matches for you. Notre Dame is probably a low reach, and I think Vanderbilt is a reach. Sorry–those are the only schools I’m pretty familiar with. My friend was just accepted to ND with similar stats, so I think you have a good shot. If you could chance me I’d appreciate it! Thanks and good luck!

I typically use possible as a middle value between a likely and a reach. Like it is possible for you to get into that school.- meaning you are about in the range of students accepted. sorry for the confusion. chance back please

Likely to get into NYU, USC, and UM. Emory, UND, and BC are low reaches. Vandy likes people with high test scores so if you bump your SAT to a 2200+ you would have a good chance.

Ohh that makes sense Bell315.

Yeah, I do realize my GPA and SAT scores may not hurt me but still probably aren’t advantageous for Vandy (and probably UND).

Any more responses would be appreciated!

Hey guys; I just wanted to bring this thread back up due to new information.

It seems that I’ll be getting a C in IB Physics SL this semester. I’m getting all A’s (with one likely A-) in my other IB courses, but this C sticks out like a sore thumb. My UW is already a 3.8 which is average/below average at some of the more competitive universities where I’ve applied, so do you think this C is really going to hurt me?

Also, I have no study hall or free period and my schedule is just about the most rigorous that an IB senior can take. There’s definitely no senioritis here— I’ve probably worked harder this semester than in any other; this class and its teacher have just been quite difficult for me. It’s my first C and I only got one non-A (a B+) junior year, but I’m still so worried cause I’m afraid colleges like Vandy and USC will be on the fence with me and then see this C and decide against my admission. I’ve already been accepted to BC and U of M but the rest of the colleges on my list are RD, and very competitive ones, so I’m pretty worried…

Thanks in advance for all responses.

Giving this another bump so hopefully I can get some responses

Vanderbilt doesn’t actually require senior grades. I think you’re very likely everywhere except Notre Dame and Vanderbilt. I’d bet that you’ll get into Notre Dame because of your outstanding ECs but like the others said, GPA and SAT are a bit low for Vanderbilt so I’d call it a reach, but not an unrealistic one

Are you sure Vandy doesn’t require senior grades? I really hope you’re right but I’ve done a few minutes of searching and can’t find something that 100% backs that up. On the Common App, it seems to ask for Midyear grades like all other colleges.

Thanks for the response though!

Vanderbilt and Notre Dame reaches - good chance everywhere else.

I agree with most posters above. Vanderbilt is tough bc they seem to really prefer high test scores (yours is great, don’t get me wrong) more so than other things. The rest I think you have a very good shot at, but no guarantees.

Chance me back?

It seems the consensus is that Vanderbilt is the biggest reach/toughest overall acceptance for me so far. I’m interviewing with an alum in a few days so hopefully that can help, though the C semester grade will almost definitely leave its mark.

Once again, thanks for the responses so far.
