Please Chance Me! Rice, UChicago, Berkeley, Brown, MIT, Purdue, WashU, Michigan.

I applied early decision at Rice and early action at UChicago and was deferred by both. I have no idea what that means for my chances (Chicago usually accepts 10% of deferred students, Rice doesn't give any such numbers) and has me a little nervous about the other schools I've applied to or plan to apply to, so I'm turning to the CC community. Please chance me and I WILL CHANCE YOU BACK!

In addition to Rice and Chicago, I have already applied to 2 schools that I believe to be safeties (U of Florida and U of Washington) as well as UC-Berkeley. I will likely also apply to MIT, Brown, Purdue (legacy), WashU, and U of Michigan.

MAJORS: Looking to major in Chem Engineering or Applied Math with minor or 2nd major in Political Science

GRADES/CLASS RANK: My HS uses a weird GPA scale: non-Honors courses are worth 4.67 pts for A+, 4.33 pts for A, etc. while Honors/AP courses get an added 2/3 pts. My GPA on this scale is 4.44. My unweighted GPA (4-pt scale) is around 3.8 and my UC GPA is around 4.0. I have mostly As and no grades below B- on my transcript. My class rank is 20th in a class of about 250.

TESTING:
SAT Superscored: CR 670, Math 740, Writing 780 (Total: 2190)
SAT best sitting: CR 670, Math 710, Writing 780 (Total: 2160)
Retaking in January and sending to MIT, Brown, UChicago (no others accept it)
Subject Tests: Math II 800, Chem 760, US History 800

I'm taking the ACT for the first and only time in February and sending scores to UChicago (only one that accepts Feb scores).

APs: 5s on Chem and APUSH, 4 on English Lit

KEY EXTRACURRICULARS:

- Spanish Honor Society (since gr10)
- Academic Achievement in Social Studies/History courses (gr9 & gr11)

ESSAYS: I don't feel comfortable explaining the topics of any essays, but everything is reviewed by at least family members before submission. My CommonApp essay and my Rice supplement were reviewed by private admissions experts. Both of those as well as my Chicago supplement and UC Application were reviewed by multiple English teachers.

So what do you think of my chances at any of my listed schools?

BUMP! Come on, guys… seriously? Nobody will chance me? I promise this isn’t an ego-boosting thing… I didn’t intend to make any Chance Me posts before receiving that pair of deferral letters… PLEASE chance me. I promise I will chance you back if I haven’t chanced you already!

I was accepted to UChicago EA, and I think I’m on par with a lot of your stats…I would just make sure that you send a really good letter to your admissions counselor as to why UChicago is still on your list. Also, I’m not sure if you should take this into consideration…but UChicago doesn’t have Chemical Engineering, instead, they are developing an Institute for Molecular Engineering.

I think you actually have a good chance to UChicago! I think your GPA slightly tugged you down, but your ECs and Subject test scores are rock solid.

For some reason, I have a hunch that Rice has a better chance of accepting you.

And Berkeley is a great match, and you are basically guaranteed if you live in CA. Otherwise you still are a very strong applicant.

Wow my SAT scores are a lot like yours and I am applying to Rice regular decision. I will probably not stand a chance :(. Anyways, don’t lose hope. I also got deferred from Pomona. Here’s my take:
MIT: reach for anyone (a girl last year didn’t get in from our school with a 2390 SAT)
Brown: same as above
I don’t know much about Purdue
UChiago: reach because you know… it’s Uchicago
U of Michigan: match
WashU: low reach
UC-Berkeley: low reach because engineering is competitive
Btw, you’re taking your SAT in january again? May I ask how many times you have already taken it? Some colleges don’t like students who obsess over their SATs, specially those ones who require full testing history.

MIT: reach (reach for everyone)
Brown: reach
Purdue: high match
UChicago: reach
U of Michigan: match
WashU: low reach
UC-Berkeley: low reach

MIT: Reach
UChicago: Reach
Brown: Reach
UC-Berkeley: Low Reach
WashU: Low Reach
U of Michigan: High Match
Purdue: Match

Chance back?

For those who wonder about residence: I am an out-of-state applicant for all of the state schools, but was born in Florida and have prepaid tuition there (which is the major reason I applied lol). I’m told my RI residency hurts regarding applying to Brown but helps to get in to schools that love to brag about having students from all 50 states.

@kennedyiceit: I am aware that UChicago has no engineering major or minor, I just happen to love the school, plus it is strong in math/sciences even w/o an engineering major.

well there will be a molecular engineering minor this upcoming fall 2014!!!

I honestly did not know that, kennedy… thanks! That’s great news!

MIT: Reach
UChicago: Low Reach
Brown: Low Reach
UC-Berkeley: Low Reach
WashU: Low Reach
U of Michigan: High Match
Purdue: Match
Rice: Definite Match

Chance me back!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1598514-bates-college-chance.html

no problem redsox!

MIT: reach
Brown: mid-reach (Brown has always had an art or non-science feel to it, in my opinion.)
Purdue: match
UChicago: reach (I would definitely update them with any new EC’s and honors to show that you’re still interested)
U of Michigan: match
WashU: low reach/high match
UC-Berkeley: low reach (REALLY good for engineering. If you get in, i would definitely suggest you go there haha)

Good Luck!!

@GottaGetThat24, Classof2018app, and others: Berkeley’s ChemE department is actually within the surprisingly-existent College of Chemistry, so I actually applied into that College, not into Engineering. However, I’m told the two have similar selectivity and are both more selective than the other Colleges within Berkeley.

@GottaGetThat: Surprisingly, Brown has a universally-high-ranked Applied Math department, and it’s said to be strong in my other interests as well, so it’s definitely worth applying from an academic standpoint. Like with Chicago, though, social fit was the biggest factor in deciding to apply.

One last BUMPlease chance me and I’ll chance you back

Purdue: Match
Michigan: Low Reach
UChicago and Rice: Low-Medium Reach

Everything else is reach. Good luck on the application process.:D
