Hi
I am in-state, and a sophomore. I am interested to join UM COE.
I am one year advanced in Math (from my middle school days), I already completed Pre-Cal (in 10th Grade). I was one of the TOP scorers, in AMC12, (in the achievement Roll being a 10th grader and scoring high in AMC12, I checked the MAA website there are 373 students in the achievement roll this year from USA) and was invited to AIME and got a Certificate from my school.
I have taken AP History, English Intensive, two years of PLTW, all my courses that I have taken so far from 9th grade are AC courses (except english and PLTW). By the end of 11th grade I will be able to complete 7 APs. Currently I have a cumulative GPA (UW) of 3.76. I will be giving my ACT and SAT this year. I have two internship lined up at UM ann arbor this year during summer. I have being doing volunteering consistently for the past two years. What are my chances for UM ann arbor, college of engineering? Can anybody please advise?
As a sophomore, it is a little too early to chance you for admissions. Your grades from here on out in science and math classes will be crucial. Also, it would be a good idea to participate in a science or engineering related extracurricular activity during the school year if they are offered at your school, like Science Olympiad or Robotics. If they are not offered at your school, you will not be penalized during admissions. Finally, your ACT/SAT score is also important. An ACT of 33+ would be very good, and a 32 would still be good if you have strong math and science scores.
You are on the right track to give yourself a good chance of admission to UMich. If you can get your GPA up and participate in science-related extracurricular activities, you would further increase your chances. Your GPA is probably the weakest part of your admissions profile at the moment.
I have always kept A (as grades) in science and Math. I have also participated in Robotics in 9th grade but not in 10th grade. I have coached since 8th grade Science Olympiad for elementary school. This year at 10th grade I took :
Geo Phys AC
AP US History
German 3AC
Engish Intensive
Math Pre-Cal
PLTW engineering
Band
For 11th I will be taking:
Calculus BC
AP chem
AP computer science
AP macro Economic
AP government
AP english
Band
For extra curricular/volunteering
Junior Varsity Tennis
Art
Marching Band
Science olympiad coach
VA hospital
Rec &ed
Food Gatherers
Student council
and others
I will be doing internship this year at UM Ann Arbor engineering and another department in UM, two departments. I have taken 2 years of PLTW engineering.
This yer also I have been the top scorer in my school and got an award for that as the top achiever for the AMC 12 and got invited in AIME. So any advise what are my changes at UM college of engineering and how can I improve on my chances will be greatly appreciated.
I’d say that, so long as you continue to get A’s, particularly in math and science but also in your other classes as well, you have a good chance of gaining acceptance. Obviously, there are never any guarantees with a selective school like Michigan, but you will certainly have a competitive application.
Good teacher recommendations, strong essays, and a 32+ ACT score would give you an excellent shot at admission in my opinion.
No one here can chance you somewhat accurately.
You do not even ahve ACT/SAT scores yet :P.
Relax, put your best foot forward, and then maybe come back for a chance (although “chance me” threads are hardly useful, coming from someone who was addicted to them as a HS senior).
