I think you have a decent chance. Your ACT score is the very low end of the middle 50% range. Your GPA is obviously excellent, but unless I am misreading your post, it seems as if you only have one AP course. The rigor of your schedule is very important. Hopefully your ec’s, essays, and tescher recommendations will help get you in. Good luck potatoo!

let’s kick this around a little bit, terpmom and anyone else. I think we agree that UMD is stats obsessed. They also like Michigan diversity when they can get it. I’m betting the 4.0/top 1% says more positive things than the ACT says negative. I’m betting they look at the ECs and say, yeah, that confirms the 4.0, that this kid is a go-getter and the ACT is not indicative. The APs I can’t address because I don’t know the high school record on APs, but maybe the AO does and the APs will hurt the potatoo. Your thoughts?

You quite possibly are correct jkeil911. Her numbers are def in the range, just at the very lowest end. We were told that they look at the courses you took in high school to see if you challenged yourself. Some schools don’t offer a full range of AP courses, and certainly those students wouldn’t be penalized for not having them. I think she has a good shot at getting in…just don’t see it as a slam dunk.

Whether people like it or not colleges do put a lot of emphasis on standardized test scores. Why? Because they are standardized and can be compared across the board. The SAT and ACT eliminate many biases associated with difficulty or availability of high school courses. Even within my high school we have teachers teaching the same AP courses who grade completely differently. My high school also does not give any extra credit for honors courses while some schools give and additional 0.5/honors class. I am not a fan of the SAT but I also think a GPA of 4.0 can be very misleading in certain cases. Terpmom is correct rigor is very important, think colleges would rather see a lower GPA with difficult courses than a 4.0 with less challenging courses.

I agree with bbl that colleges like to see kids taking the most challenging classes, and that does seem to offset a lower GPA, especially if you have high test scores.
