Please Chance Me!

I'm considering majoring in Biology at Stony Brook...what are my chances???

3.58 weighted gpa
2100 SAT - 750 M, 680 W, 670 CR
31 ACT
AP: Stats, Chem, Bio, Lit, Eng&Comp, US History, Gov't&Politics (7 in all)
9 Honors
Female Asian-American
ECs: Volunteered at a camp for 2 summers, swimming 7 years, 3 yr varsity letter for swimming, spring track in 9th grade, volunteer club for senior citizens, 2 yrs orchestra, national merit commended

I know my gpa is low..TT_TT I was hoping my SAT/ACT + course rigor would make up for it...

you have a pretty good chance.
are those your AP’s now? (i’m guessing you’re a junior) or are those your AP’s including the ones in senior year?

Jr Year I took AP Bio, US History, and English Language
Sr Year I’m taking AP Chem, Stats, Gov’t, and English Literature…

And I’m going to be a sr this September
Is it harder to get in when out-of-state? I looked it up and 95% of the students are in-state…does this put me at a disadvantage? :(

Also, is being Chinese a disadvantage? I’m 1st generation college student!

Is there anything I should do to improve? I’m retaking SATs Oct to bring it up

My GPA uw is a little low though…I have 3.32 :frowning: I know that’s not in the average but will this hurt me very badly?

accepted. most def.

even though i was instate, i had much lower stats and i got in.

I’m actually out-of-state…is it better to be out-of-state or in-state?

ChickenOnRice: so I would be able to get in as a psychology major and possibly either biology or Chinese major?! Thank you so much for your response!!! :)

you’re more likely to get in out-of-state because every college loves out-of-state people. but it’ll cost more. there is a great percentage of in-state because it’s so much more cost-efficient to be in-state though.
and your SAT’s are really high i don’t think you should freak out so much. my unweighted GPA was a little higher than your weighted, but i went to a small school and took a lot less AP’s (mainly because my school didn’t offer that many either).

there are a lot of asian people there, but i don’t think it’ll be that much of a disadvantage. it’s probably more about what kind of scholarship you’re going to get.

also, i think SBU takes up to 28 transfer credits from AP Tests and if you do very well on the AP tests, idk how much you could transfer in… i only took 3 AP’s my entire HS career (US, Euro, Latin) and I received 6 credits for each.

Thank you for the reply
Do you know if Stony Brook is good for pre-med? How is their reputation among the medical schools - and what is the rate of acceptance for stony brook students? I know many colleges weed out students as well - how difficult are stony brook’s weed out classes?! do many people end up staying pre-med?
is it easy to get research/volunteer/shadowing in stony brook?

the reason why i want to major in psychology is b/c i want to be a pediatric psychiatrist in the future  how hard is the psychology major?

also, you mentioned scholarships - did you receive any? :)

also, how is stony brook for grade inflation? i heard public schools grade harsher - so i’m more hesitant about enrolling in one…
do students generally tend to do well in the science classes?

my mom thinks there is no difference in choosing between rutgers and stony brook for pre-med…however, i’ve heard that stony has a better rep and better science program overall. would going to sbu be better? the money is about the same - it’s just a matter of how close the school is to my house. we live in nj so my mom complains about not being able to visit every weekend if i went to long island -_- mainly b/c of ez-pass lmao.

You should be fine with your GPA and SAT scores alone. Actually, you are in a very similar situation as I was last year. I’m also a NJ native who was accepted into Rutgers and SBU. I ended up choosing SBU. I remember in the fall semester, almost half my dorm were Biology majors (I’m a business major). I’m entering my sophomore year this coming fall, but without a scholarship now. I’m in the process of appealing it back because of a really bad fall semester.

As for visiting family, I usually only visit them on the holidays since taking the train usually takes 4 hours. If you have a car that’s even better as the commute is cut in half. Rutgers is definitely closer depending on where you live.

Drew: thank you for the reply! :)

I’m actually only a 2-hr drive from SBU and 1-hr drive from Rutgers…but crossing the bridges to get to SBU is over $50 - not including gas! :frowning: And my parents feel safer staying in the NJ area…but I love NY TT_TT It’s where I want to live in the future!

Is there a reason why many SBU students choose to major in Biology? Is it because most are pre-med? I understand they have a good science program, but I heard that SBU is actually strongest in the Physics, Chemistry, and Math departments. Is biology a difficult major at SBU?
