I'm going to dive straight into it, So I have applied to all of the UC's except for merced and riverside for fall 2014, I also have gotten accepted into SFSU for Spring 2014. The problem I am having right now is that I have a 2.95 JC Gpa, I know it is not great at all but I have had family health problems/ family business to take care during my JC career. I did address in my UC essay that I am an only child and my father was diagnosed with cancer and was being treated for it and I had to take on my fathers responsibility's of course for our family business and that's why my GPA is not up to par. The problem i'm having is I would really like to attended a UC and would deff. take any UC over SFSU any day but SFSU starts on Jan. 27 and I have to let them know if I am attending by Jan. 19. Should I not take my admission at SFSU and try my chances at a UC? And also I don't know if it matters but I applied as a psych major to all of the UC's and my Psych GPA is 3.5 and if i do decided to not go to SFSU I can also get my AA from my JC in Psych. I already have my IGETC done and will be getting my AA if I decide not to go to SFSU

Please what would you guys recommend? should I take a shot at the UC's?

If your UC transferable GPA is 2.95 you should go into SFSU. Only UCB UCI, UCLA and UCM read personal statements and your GPA is too low for all of them save maybe UCM.

I second what Bomerr said. There is quite a few people applying to the UC’s for admission. They had record breaking numbers last year. One can only speculate an increase in the applications for this upcoming fall. The 2.95 is far below the Average GPA admitted. your major is highly impacted so it’s almost a zero % chance of admittance. Go to SFSU. Don’t wait around only to be disappointed. There is a small percentage chance that you can be admitted by exception but this is a really slim window. I think it’s only 2% or less applicants get admitted like this.

Go to SFSU. The only UC you have even a little shot with is Merced and MAYBE Riverside, and those are the 2 you didn’t apply to. Start this Spring, and you can graduate a semester earlier than you planned.

I can tell you are a strong person from reading your post. However, your GPA is not high enough for psychology major since this is impacted. You definitely have an amazing story, but nobody would be accepted based on only personal statement. If I were you, I would choose SFSU. Good luck!

I dont know how much you like gambling but or if you know about football but your chances are similar to the Steelers making the playoffs. Not to bead a dead horse, but knowing your situation about your GPA, why would you leave out UC Merced and UC Riverside??? These are the schools were you have the most realistic chance?? would you rather go to SFSU or UCM or UCR??
What you can do is tell SFSU that you are interested in going but due to illness in family you want to defer your admission until Fall 2014. Meanwhile go to stay at the community college for the spring and try to take classes that will transfer to both SFSU and UC’s.

Because they’re different you know double check and if you’re at a 3.0+ you have an okay chance at UCSB (not great but okay like 55/45 for psych)

OR stay in JC get your grades up and reapply next year after you have your AA

wow thank you guys for the quick responses and Yeah I left out UC Merced and Riverside because I honestly would rather attend SFSU instead of those, to Matt4200 I thought they both are the same (csu gpa, UC gpa)? with exception of a Public speaking course which I did not add to my UC gpa because it does not count according to assist.org

And I looked at the bulletin for defer enrollment for SFSU and they said they do not defer enrollment , maybe in my situation it’s different? ? I will call admissions at sfsu when they open up in Jan 2

Thanks you guys again your time is greatly appreciated

@Bigperm23: CSU and UC GPA’s are different in a lot of ways a lot of classes are only CSU transferable and not UC transferable, maybe this is not the case for you but it’s worth looking into. Your college catalog at your CC should be able to say if the courses individually transfer to either both the UC and CSU or just CSU.

As for the Speech Class required for CSU admission it is calculated into UC GPA I just checked on Assist from my CCC to a UC and it’s on there all public speaking courses that fulfill the CSU admissions requirement count in UC GPA.

Depending on the courses you’ve taken, you should try to separate your CSU and UC GPA. You’ll need to look at assist.org or the IGETC courses at your school to see which are transferable. As Matt4200 pointed out.

Not always Matt4200. Some community colleges may differ in that certain courses (such as Public Speaking) are not equivalent to a UC course. I think this the case for you, bigperm23.

Also, if you do find out that your UC transfer GPA is different (and higher) than the CSU GPA - then there can be a chance. With that current GPA though, you’ll most likely be waitlisted or rejected at the UC’s.

I apologize if you thought I was speaking for all CCC’s in respect to the CSU admission requirement Area C course.

I was saying my CCC has it listed as being UC transferable and I confirmed that through assist.

And like I said earlier Bigperm23 if your UC GPA ends up being a 3.0+ you have a more than 50/50 chance at at least UCSB. It’s hard to tell for UCSD because they don’t do transfer stats by major, but id think anywhere besides UCSB, UCM, and UCR you’d need minimum 3.2+ to get in for most majors.

So do some digging into your coursework and see what transfers to UC’s and what doesn’t and you will have your answer.
