Hi everyone I am beginning my third year at community college here in san jose california. I currently have a 2.5 GPA, I'm studying psychology and it's my third year because I switched majors twice. I have had a hard time dealing with some personal issues that I will discuss in my essay when I apply, I have many F's that I retook or going to retake, I have a few W's, my life the past few years have been very difficult. I have been taking care of my dad who has had cancer and recently passed away and greatly affected my life and ability to do well in school. I plan on getting straight A's these next few quarters and raising my GPA to a 3.0 What are my chances of getting into any of hte UC's? Most notably UC Irvine, or UCSD. I'm applying for CSU's as well. I am currently in psychology club and have been busy reading various psychology texts and things in my spare time, I have a huge passion for it and helping other people going through hard times and other issues in life. What are my chances? Thanks

Thats hard to say. Personally I would say that your chances are slim to none. I don’t mean to disappoint you but I believe thats the reality. My suggestion: Go to a CSU, do your best, and you will still live a good life.

Condolences to your father.

^What? He could definitely get in with a 3.0 to a UC.

You can easily get into most UC schools with a 3.0, in fact you’re guaranteed UCSD with a 3.0 and TAG.

Even with the F’s and W’s? Does the essay help a lot if I explain what happened?

He said he plans on getting a 3.0.

^Do you have a reason to doubt his intellectual ability to raise his GPA to a 3.0?He went through something that I doubt many of us can even comprehend. Surely he can get his GPA up and apply to the UCs with his life story.

Op, if you get your GPA up to a 3.0, you can sign TAG and will be admitted to every UC but Cal and UCLA. Even if you don’t sign TAG, I still think you have a good shot because the UCs will have compassion for your situation. BTW, retake those F grades and get As and the F grades will be removed from your GPA.

I also have many unfavorable marks on my transcript (F,D,W). However, I retook all of those classes and raised my GPA. The counselors here at my school and those at the UC’s agree that I am a competitive applicant despite my sketchy history. As long as you raise your GPA and retake those classes, you have a great shot at most of the UC’s. And as a PP mentioned, you can sign a TAG with UCI with a 3.0 GPA. I believe the minimum GPA for some majors is actually 2.7

PM me if you have any questions or need transfer advice. I am right up the street at Ohlone.

MikeC7, my situation was eerily similar to yours, if not worse from an academic standpoint. I was a high school dropout, and loitered in CC for several years with a lot of W’s and F’s my first few semesters. Making matters worse, one of my parents also got ill and passed away. However, I managed to raise my GPA quite a bit these previous few semesters, from a 2.4 to a 3.2, so it’s more than doable. I signed TAG for UCSD this winter, which technically guarantees me admission (unless Galbitang knows something I don’t). I understand some of what you’re going through. Don’t freak out. Reiterating what the previous posters have said, you’ll be absolutely fine with TAG.

Galbitang, it’s not that difficult raising a low GPA to a 3.0, especially with less than 60 semester units. A semester or two of straight A’s, or A’s and B’s can skyrocket low grades. Of course, attaining even higher grades gets progessively more difficult.

I was accepted to UCI with a 3.1 last year as a philosophy major.

Don’t listen to anyone who says your chances are slim, just raise your GPA as high as you can and write a decent personal statement, as well as explain your situation.

What if you can’t retake the F’s which is my situation. I moved far away from the CC I received the F’s at. Will academic renewal without course repetition look bad?

I’ll have about a 3.2-3.4 with the F’s or a 3.6-3.8 with academic renewal without repeating the courses.

it will look bad if the F’s you received were for prereq courses. well, it will look bad either way but worse for prereq courses. but with your given gpa, you are still eligible for TAG. your major will play a role as well. 3.2-3.4 might not cut it depending on how selective your major happens to be. check if your old CC offers those classes online so you don’t have to go back there to retake them.

Naw. None of the F’s were for pre-reqs. I’ve actually received A’s in all my major pre-reqs for Economics/Business Admin. (Micro, Macro, Stats, Business Calc, Accounting)

With at least a 3.0 and A’s in my pre-reqs will I be fine for admission with TAG?

Top 3 colleges I’m applying to: USC, UCSB, UCI. (I know USC doesn’t accept academic renewal so I’m stuck with a 3.2-3.4 for them.)

ya mike, if you get it to 3.0 or above, you should be fine. make sure you get tag though because if you don’t, it’s going to be hard to get accepted cuz ur major is really impacted. good luck man

everyones saying you can get in with a 3.0 but what there forgetting is the UC will only look at your transcripts up until this last summer. so if you have a 2.5 now thats all their going to see, right?

the UC’s see your fall grades as well because you have to update your application in late January with that semester’s grades.

they don’t see your spring semester grades until before you transfer, and usually your acceptance is based up you maintaining a certain GPA through the spring semester.

I think a 3.0 and an explanation of your unique circumstances will get you into many UC’s. You can also see a counselor or the Dean of students at your school and see if you can retroactively have any of those grades changed to incompletes (which can sometimes be frozen and are not calculated in your GPA) or Withdrawals, which still look better than F’s. Colleges often have procedures to help students that are not widely publicized. Go get help and ask if anything can be done with your transcript to help your future prospects. Create a relationship with someone at your CC who can advise you. Good luck.

So just to make things clear. If I wanna apply to UCSB: at least a 3.0, TAG, IGETC, and pre-reqs completed for their Economics and Accounting major=admission?

^here’s a link for their TAG requirements

[UCSB Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucsb.edu/prospective/LSTAGMajors.asp)

to answer your question, if you have completed all of those things then yes, you are in

do they take winter grades into consideration? or are decisions made before that?
