Rec Letters

The one from my English teacher is definitely amazing. The other one from my Indian physics teacher (probably grammatically bad) is very good at the least. She really loves me, but I’m just not sure how she wrote the letter.

Common App Essay

It’s the prompt about a topic that makes you lose track of time. The essay is written in script format, and it describes a late night of me getting absorbed in writing a short screenplay. I think it’s unique, but doesn’t tell much about me besides passion and engagement in personal interests.

Supplements

Bowdoin and Brown supplements were pretty good.

Why Northwestern was pretty good but not on the level as the others IMO.

Other details

I applied to Tulane EA last minute, without any demonstrated interest besides doing the optional Why Tulane essay. I was deferred. I know they practice yield protection but it does worry me.

Schools

Brown

WashU (sister goes there)

Northwestern

Wesleyan

Bowdoin (Mom and sister went there)

Bates

Middlebury

I have other schools with lower acceptance rates by the way, I’m just curious about these ones.

Thank you!

@redchicken101 : I am no expert here, but I think at Brown with 30,000+ applicants fighting for some 2000 RD slots, the goal should really be to stand out. (it is impossible to stand out with GPA or stats) I am not an AO, but FWIW, in terms of ECs it is the depth and quality of participation which matter the most. (leadership and achievements, role and responsibilities, time commitment) .

You listed a huge number of ECs. I hope you can articulate meaningful examples of personal contribution. Your film-making/screenwriting seem to be your main focus (you wrote in your essay and started a film club). However, you list it below your Eagle Scout/Boy Scouts of America EC. How long have you been engaged in each EC? You are in the ball game. Please update us how the result turns out.

Harvard lists the following items under interests and activities as “What We Look For” — What is the quality of your activities? Do you appear to have a genuine commitment or leadership role? What have you learned from your interests? What have you done with your interests? How have you achieved results? With what success or failure? What have you learned as a result?

I heard a lot of talks about how “quirky” Brown admission is. I think at least I can point out one aspect which is unique – AO might try to eliminate those candidates who think of Brown as a lessor Ivy and will not show up, or even show up will not be happy here. At my child’s school, all those Ivies/MIT admissions receivers had been eliminated, except my child. (same stats, perfect or near perfect scores everywhere, including multivariable calculus)

@TheOldTimer Thanks for the reply! Could you elaborate on what you’re saying in the last paragraph? Are you pointing out Brown’s quirky admissions in relation to me or just as a general observation?

@redchicken101 : It is a general observation. Just out of curiosity, did you have an interview?

@TheOldTimer No, still waiting to be contacted  Do you think I should email, or could that cause more harm than help?

@redchicken101 : If you contact Brown, you will get a stock answer. It won’t cause any harm.
