Many people believe that our government should do more to solve our problems. After all, how can one individual create more jobs or make roads safer or improve the schools or help to provide any of the other benefits that we have come to enjoy? And yet expecting that the government—rather than individuals—should always come up with the solutions to society's ills may have made us less self-reliant, undermining our independence and self-sufficiency.

========= Here is my attempt for the above prompt ====
“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” is one of the most famous quotes in the history of the United States, said by John Kennedy, a former president. Following this adage is truly very important in any society, not just in the US. Many instances in history have shown time and time again that if people strive to solve the problems in their community, the problems can be resolved much more quickly. One person cannot make the roads safer by himself or improve the entire country’s economy, but if everyone contributes, there is no limit to what can be done. Although the government has a role, if the people contribute to the welfare of the community and the nation, many problems can be resolved more efficiently and easily.
Rosa Parks is well known today for standing up for her rights, when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus. She played a major part in the Civil Rights Movement, and her actions showed the other African Americans that they should stand up for their rights, and that an end should be put to segregation. Although she was put under arrest for remaining seated, she still increased the strength of the movement to put an end to segregation in schools, transportation, and public places in general. Another example of someone taking responsibility to solve the problems of their nation is Mohandas Gandhi. Today, when we hear that name, the first phrase that comes to mind is “nonviolent civil diosbedience”. If he had wanted, Gandhi could have sat down and refused to participate in the independence movement. However, Gandhi stood up for his country, and rebelled against the British government nonviolently. It is to him that we owe the independence of India to, and in a way, he is the founder of independent India. By taking responsibility to solve problems in their community, Rosa Parks and Mohandas Gandhi led immense and successful movements to make their communities and nation better.
Even today in society, being responsible is important. For example, this past summer, I volunteered at the Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center to help out the staff and the veterans with a variety of things. Although I may not have solved the nation’s problems or even the medical center’s drawbacks, I know that I had a positive effect on the community, and helped many of those veterans that had once served us in the battle lines. Today, the US is one of the cleanest nations in the world. Imagine if everyone started throwing their trash on the roads and streets and damaging public property simply because they didn’t care about keeping a clean environment. In that case, the country would look very different, because the people refused to be responsible and help the community and nation be cleaner and more green. Overall, when people take the time to help the community and the nation in any way they can, the results are much more beneficial than if people had decided to ignore the problems of the community.
