I have a 2250 SAT (1530 out of 1600) and around a 3.3 GPA. I am a junior. I qualified for the National merit scholar program and I have leadership positions on several EC’s along with 3 years on a varsity sport. I live in a very competitive school in Connecticut. With that background (I can give more if it would help), what colleges do you think I could get into and what colleges do you think could be my reach. I already have a list, but I would love to see what others with objective opinions can tell me.
my school is one of the top 200 public schools in the country.

(if you would like to post colleges you think would be good matches for me that would be greatly appreciated as I have only visited several schools and still am very open to most things.)
Can you afford the OOS schools on your list? For the California UC’s, you will receive little to no Financial aid so your price tag will be close to $55K/year. Your SAT is competitive and the UC’s have their own way of calculating GPA. The minimum for OOS applicants is a 3.4 UC GPA.
Here is the UC calculator: http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
UC GPA only includes the a-g course grades from 10-11th grade. For OOS applicants, you get extra Honors poiints for AP and IB classes only. Once you calculate your UC GPA, repost. I would say at the moment based on your posted GPA: UCR/UCM/UCSC probably would be Matches. The rest would be Low Reaches to High Reach. Essays and EC’s will figure into your admissions chances, so if you have a good reason for the lower than average GPA, definitely address it in your essays. Good Luck.
I can afford the schools yes but did not know they were that expensive. Looking at it now I don’t think I will apply there.
also would most ap courses be considered UC approved honors courses?
Your GPA is obviously a little on the low side, but it’s not too bad if you have an upward trend. If you were to apply to all the schools on your list and had killer essays, recs, etc., then I’d say NYU, UW, and maybe a couple of the slightly lower UCs (UCSB, UCSD, UCI, etc.) would accept you.
NYU is actually not as competitive as people may think (my brother got in and had similar stats), but the price can be a little ridiculous. I’m from Manhattan, so I know firsthand how bad the living expenses in New York can get…
Thanks for the advice I greatly appreciate it
Yes, all AP classes are considered for the extra Honors points (maximum 8 semesters) for the UC GPA calculation.
