I have seen a thread that asks members to rate ECs (from a scale of 1-10), so I hope I can have the same for me. Thanks.

School Activities –
1. Tennis (on high school team since 9th grade; captain of JV squad in 10h; I think I'll make varsity this year)
2. Key Club (one of the officers)
3. Student Council
4. Tech Crew
5. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)
6. Played ice hockey on HS team (2 years)

Volunteer Work –
1. Hospital Teen Volunteer (my passion lies here; I currently have ~225 hours and 450 hours is to be eligible for the scholarship that I believe is around $2,000)

Special Nominations and Programs -
1. Won two consecutive "Most Improved Awards" on my HS ice hockey team
2. Tennis award in sophomore year for “Most outstanding doubles player”

Please leave any comments for a specific rating.

They are a lot better than mine, that's for sure. I'm glad you liked my idea though. I would say 8, 9 if you can tie them together and/or get the 450 hours.

When I decided on choosing what ECs to get involved in, I chose things that were "selective" and were not the ECs that people generally jumped right into. Key club is an exception to this rule because I made sure to apply to become an officer.

Not to be harsh, but you don't really stand out from other people. There are thousands of other students who are in clubs, play a sport, and who doesn't volunteer at a hospital? You should focus on EC that will make you DIFFERENT, such as volunteering internationally, publishing a book, or organizing a fund raise for your city.

zograscope,
I'm not applying to a top-tier college. As much as I want to be able to do those things, I don't really have the opportunity. I'm basically an orphan because I hardly see my parents when I come home from school and have to set up my own schedules.

Tennis (This is good, not incredibly unique but not bad! Try to be captain of varsity if you can)

Key Club (I believe this is really well looked upon by colleges if you are a president/vice president, but an officer nonetheless is good).

Student Council (again, anything on student council is well looked upon).

Tech Crew (what is this? Haha)

Future Business Leaders of America (I've heard this looks great to colleges! But then again I've also heard it's "generic", but I wouldn't give the 2nd person much merit).

Played ice hockey on HS team (If you want to play in college, east coast teams and some midwest love ice hockey!)

Volunteer Work
1. Hospital Teen Volunteer (Again, nothing too unique, but good luck and it's great nonetheless! Good luck on getting the scholarship!).

Special Nominations and Programs -
1. Won two consecutive "Most Improved Awards" on my HS ice hockey team (solid).
2. Tennis award in sophomore year for Most outstanding doubles player (solid).

I'd give you a 10 because you are a teen participating in extra curriculars instead of doing drugs, drinking, or watching highschool musical, but for a college point of view I'd say 6-7. Again, best of luck!

Thanks again Poseidenj,
I'm getting good vibes from your introspective explanations. As for Tech Crew (or Technical Crew), it is a small group in my school that you have to get a couple of recommendations from teachers to join. There's only about 5-6 in the group at the moment. What the group basically does is assist the actors/actresses in the school plays, musicals, etc. that occur during the school year. The tasks that are included are: setting and testing microphones for the actors/actresses, spotlights, adjust microphone volumes, etc. during a play, etc. going on, and so on.

For ice hockey, I wouldn't say that I am college material. I think I could be if I continued because I was really dedicated with it and it helped me deal with stress. That dedication in turn helped me win those two "Most Improved Awards" in two consecutive years. I would most likely do intramural or club sports at whatever school that I go to. My uncle did intramural ice hockey for Columbia when he was studying to be a surgeon there. I'll most likely be doing that as well.

I might not have those 'flashy' or 'extremely unique' ECs, but I've aimed one that reflects who I am. I don't have as many opportunities that I could possibly have, but I definitely have more then what my parents had. I'm grateful nonetheless and hoping to emphasize dedication in my college essay/application. I think dedication is the ultimate means of potential and success in life (we'll get to this discussion another time).
