Psychologist Carl Jung said, "The more critical reason dominates, the more impoverished life becomes.... [When reason is overvalued,] the individual is pauperized." He felt that felying more on facts and rationality than on imgination and theory detracts from the quality of a person's intellectual life.

One of the great marvels of humanity is its ability to collect and organize a group of facts into a concept. Thus, my argument in the facts versus concepts debate is that good sound concepts must be based on facts. Therefore, knowing facts comes first, as the knowledge forms the underlying basis of our concepts.

And example showing the value of factual knowledge is science. Prior to the Renaissance, philosophers determined scientific laws through simple thought and common sense. For example, they deduced that the sun went around the earth, because it seemed to rise above the horizon in the morning and sink below the horizon in the evening. Also, philosophers decided that heavier objects fell faster than lighter objects because they were heavier. However, we know today that these imaginative, thought-out theories is incorrect.

The reason for this is a huge change in attitude during the Age of Enlightenment. For the first time ever, proofs were needed to prove hypotheses. Scientists began to use observable concepts, not just thought. Through this, we realized that the acceleration of an object did not depend on its mass. Galileos proof for this came from the fact that when two spheres were dropped from the Pisa Tower, the heavier of the tow reached the ground at the same time. Also, Copernicus used his telescope to observe the motion of the planets relative to the sun, and with this knowledge, determined that the Earth orbited the sun.

Our ancestors have showed us that knowing facts is more important than understanding concepts and ideas. Facts and knowledge are the foundation of a sound concept, and it has been proved historically that without observable facts, our concepts often go awry. Therefore, I believe that facts are of greater importance than ideas and concepts.
