Please help engineering ed chances

I go to a very competitive private high school in New Jersey. Widowed parent, income around 40k ish, first generation college student.

white male (double damn)

SAT I: 2020 690 CR, 630 Math, 700 Writing
SAT II: Haven't taken any yet but plan on doing math 1 (is math 2 basically required?), chem, and maybe lit/history (any preference for a third?)

I only have the october testing date for the sat 2s since the next one is after the ed date.

GPA: 3.8 something UW I did incredibly poor freshmen year and had to work instensely hard to get my grades up. I don't know if they'll see that but the self-improvement was immense

Rank: top 10

Junior year coursework: Honors English, Honors Chem, Honors Alg2/Trig, Ap US History, Honors Spanish 3, Religion (required)

four quarter grades and then year grade

Honors English- 97 97 99 98 98
Alg2 Trig Honors 95 94 96 95 95
AP USH- 99 99 99 99 99
Chemistry Honors 99 99 98 99 98
Spanish 3 Honors 96 97 97 96 95
Religion- 99 99 99 99 99

Senior year: AP Eng, Honors Physics, Ap Art History, Ap US History, Honors Precalc

My school only offers ap classes in English, Art History, US History, and Calc BC, so I'm taking all I am qualified for. I tried starting a US Gov AP and Euro Hist AP but the head of the department turned me down.

Taken 2 courses at a local community college, intro to philosophy (freshmen year- A-), sociology (sophomore year A), looking into another one now.

Extracurriculars:

Academic Team- Captain

Robotics Team-builder and participant when we won the 2005 and 2006 state championships for FIRST (possible hook? Idk..)

Thanks for any help guys I really appreciate this, college planning is driving me crazy since I have to do everything on my own.

Take SAT I again and try to improve (especially) your math score.

Well like I said, ed would be a better chance for aaceptance than regular......but I only have one testing date before that which is in october, next is in november afte ed date. The one in october HAS to be for sat2s since I haven't taken them yet.

Any other remarks other than retake sat?

I do think 630 Math is too low for engineering but you can certainly try. You've got nothing to lose unless applying ED at Cornell means giving up opportunities to apply ED at some lesser schools.

Scoring well in SAT II Math 2c should help your case.

BTW, I think you do need to retake SAT I (in November or December) to boost your chances in the RD round just in case Cornell ED doesn't work out.

im pretty much stuck with a november 4th test date for sat i's (my first score is 1910 XD), and im planning on applying ed for either cornell or JHU. I heard you can actually get away with such a late test date, but its recommended you send a written statement as to why you chose to do so. is this true? also, im planning on taking ACT's(first time) this sept.. I feel pretty damn confident in 31+, would this basically nullify my sat i scores?
thanks

I would also like to know about the testing in november and still havng it applicable to ed.

Goldtx: when you said 630 is too low for engineering, what would be acceptable? Do I have to take math 2c or is 1 alright if I do realyl well on it?

I am not sure about testing in November. Cornell clearly indicates that for ED, SAT tests should be taken before November. A letter of explanation may or may not work. But again, you've got nothing to lose if you try to write them a letter to explain your situation.

You need to take SAT II Math 1c or 2c on top of SAT I. The following is an excerpt from Cornell's Engineering site (<a href="http://www.engineering.cornell.edu/prospective/undergraduate/admissions-faqs.cfm):%5B/url%5D">http://www.engineering.cornell.edu/prospective/undergraduate/admissions-faqs.cfm):</a>

What are the SAT II requirements?
The College of Engineering requires students applying for Fall 2006 admission to submit scores for two SAT II exams: one in math (any level) and one in science, as well as scores from the new SAT which now includes a writing section (since the SAT II in writing is no longer offered), or the ACT. If you choose to submit ACT scores, Cornell requires that you also take the 30-minute writing component of the ACT exam which was added in February 2005 for students applying to college for the fall semester of 2006 or later.

Thanks man. But do you think I should do math 2 even though I'll probably do terrible or math 1 and do good?

Also what are some ranges for sat1 math, sat2 math, chem I need to be competitive

If you have taken trigonometry or precalculus, you should take SAT II Math Level 2. Math Level 1 is for people who have only taken Algebra 1, 2, and Geometry.

Cornell Engineering has the highest acceptance rate, which is good. However, it also the highest SAT score averages. To be competitive, I think you need to score at least 700 in SAT I Math, and probably 720-750 in SAT II Math and Chemistry. The college is looking for students who are strong in math and science. But of course "test scores are not everything".

See the thign about it is I was a poor student until sophomore year so I never had the beginning math stuff I needed. That's why going into senior year I'm only going to have precalc honors instead of calc ap. Last year I had alg2/trig so that's why idk if I should do 1c or 2c as of now.

To be frank, a 630 on Math SAT is a bit low for ENG. Most Cornell Engineering students have scores around 750...(FACT: The 75th Percentile score at ENG is 790).

I would recommend you do IIC. Trust me, its really a cake-walk. The grading scale is very linient too. And, I recommend you do SAT II Physics...It would certainly help you if ur applying to ENG.

[/quote]

Most acceptees to ENG, have around a 750 or more.

But, definitely do give Cornell a shot...If you present your app in a great way, It'll certainly help your chances a lot.

oh, man. i miss that sat math iic. sadly my only 800...

Arjun Shankar Prakash: I do know that my math sat is a bit low, but will that really stop me from getting in if the rest of application is pretty good. I know it's not the best but I was thinking it might be a little better than others if all they have are amazing sat grades.

Also do you think taking math 1, 2, and chem (I can't take physics since I have the class next year) would be a good trio?

Just take math 2 and chem..

Taking precalc senior year will look pretty bad, but if you get a 780+ on math 2 (which is essentially precalc & trig) that'd be better

I know precalc looks pretty bad but I tried taking it over the summer but my teacher didn't like me and said I wasn't allowed to take it and go into calc.

get your math score to above 700 and you are good
SAT II: Take Math II its easy
physics and us history also

and try to get above a 700 on the SATII

Everything else in your app seems good...and, if you write some kick arse essays, it should make up for it...Try and bringout your passion for Science to the best.
Math 1, 2 and chem should be fine...But, I would recommend taking Math I/II, Chem and Physics....just a sugesstion, because Engineering is more Physics related (Unless ur planning on Chemical or Bio Eng).

Naturally I would aim to take 2 sciences and a math but since I haven't had physics until next year I doubt I'd do any better than "failure" on that one.

I'm not sure if alg2/trig has prepared me enough for math 2c, seeing as that was my ast math class before precalc honors next year.

I thought you're going to take Calc BC AP in your senior year, no?

No no, I guess I wasn't clear. My school offers calc bc ap and that's the only ap they offer that I'm not taking because my techer wouldn't let me skip precalc if I took a summer class.
