I need help, because I do not understand what course of actions to do to get this fixed for eligibility of my financial aid and ability to go to FSU.
Was your father required to file a tax return in 2015?
If so…he needs to,get this done.
If he was not required to file…why? If he really was not required to file, he would need to complete a non-filers statement.
What about your mom?
I am so sorry, I did not refresh the page. My father was required to, but he lost his job and was jobless for awhile. He made only like 13,750 in 2015. My mother is not in my life.
From everything I have gathered, he has to file a 1040 from 2015 and mail it in? Somehow get the tax transcript after paying whatever he owes?
Why doesn’t he want to file? He could file as head of household and maybe get an Earned Income Tax Credit. And possibly a refund of tax paid.
Do you have any siblings?

Call and find out if there is a VITA site near you, they can help your dad with the filing of 2015 and 2016 if he brings his W2 and other income information.
Does he know for sure that he owes tax? Did he work for an employer? Did he get unemployment compensation?
As a single father with low income he should qualify for some tax credits.
If he does a paper return with tax due it might take a long time for the transcript to be available.
Ask the FA office if they will accept a copy of his W2 or tax return until the tax transcript is available.
I bet he doesn’t owe any tax for 2015 and may even have a refund or credits due to him if he has any credits (EIC) or if he had any withholdings. This could be good news. If he is head of household and has you as a dependent, he’d have about $8500 as a standard deduction and about $7000 in exemptions.
Why didn’t he file in 2015?
Is he filing for 2016?
Please have him talk to someone who can help him with this, a tax prep office in town? If he qualifies for a refund, he can file a return up to three years back I believe.
And 2016 is due tomorrow.
Actually, 2016 tax return filing deadline is Tuesday April 18, 2017 as April 15 is a non-business day and Monday, April 17 is Emancipation day
