My daughter submitted her portion to NMSC on 09/20/2015. She just logged on to the NMSC portal and it says “Your school official has not transmitted the completed application to NMSC.” The letter we have from NMSC says “The school official will finalize the application by completing the school’s portion and transmitting it to NMSC by October 7, 2015.” I had (stupidly) assumed that her school would do what they needed because they have a huge number of national merit students every year and have done this every single year in the past without fail. Aside from calling the school (which we are doing first thing in the morning), what do we need to do? Thank you.
I can’t guarantee anything, but there were some issues with getting my rec letter when I was applying, and I called NMSC about the prospect of a late submission. They seemed to indicate that the October date provided wasn’t hard and fast - aka they knew that there were sometimes issues on the schools side and did make provisions for that. Definitely call the school and NMSC to make sure they are aware of the situation. Good luck!
OK, thanks. I wish I hadn’t just assumed that everything would be done! Our school does a lot of these and I’ve never heard of an issue before. Your post gives me a little hope that we can still get this fixed.
They are used to schools missing their dates, especially if they aren’t used to having NMSFs. Check with the GC on Monday – but it isn’t even that late yet, won’t cause an issue. Don’t abuse the GC.
It’s a week and a half late so far, so I think it’s normal to be concerned and also annoyed. Of course no one is going to “abuse the GC” but I do want to know what happened. I am still holding out hope that it’s the NMSC portal that’s wrong or not updated, rather than the school not having done their part.
You have all rights to be upset with GC not submitting school portion, but it is best if you stay on top of all submission deadlines and check portals. I think you should call NM office and also work with your GC tomorrow. When I called NM office few days prior to the deadline ( our GC decided to submit exactly on a deadline) they told me that schools might ask for an extension. But they have to ask for it, it is not just granted.
We have been so on top of all deadlines for the colleges themselves and it just slipped my mind to have dd check on this one until today. They do like a hundred of these a year and I assumed we were in good hands. That’s the last time I’m going to assume anything, for sure. It’s a lesson learned and hopefully not one that costs us lots of money.
You will see posts out here in December where kids/parents are just figuring out their GCs did not do what they need to do. Those kids don’t get shut out of NMF. 10 days is nothing in terms of being late for GC with college related materials. Recommendations, transcripts, etc. are regularly that late as well. I realize it is stressful to watch as a parent or student, but it all works out. That is BS that if the school does not ask for the extension that NM won’t consider the kid for NMF if the paperwork is later.
OK, thanks, and I’m sure you are right. However, we obviously need to call the school and make sure they are moreon top of everything from here on out. I can’t take the stress of it otherwise. It’s a lot of money we’re talking about.
Hey, how did it turn out with the school and application?
