Please Help me choose between U of U / Stony Brook/ Uf of F/U of Minnestoa TC

Hi ,

I got admits from U of U / Stony Brook/ Uf of F/U of Minnesota TC form MS in Computer scinece

All of these school are very much close in the rankings.

can you please compare these school on following criteria :-

Quality of education
Cost
Post graduation jobs/ internships
reputation

Thank you in advance.

what’s u of u? and minnesota - twin cities is what i would go with. not sure if you’re in-state or not, but if you are, then cost shouldn’t be too bad. even if you’re OOS, i know people from my HS (i’m from NY) that go/went there and it was fine. as far as reputation goes, it’s a great school.

The prior poster, Ironicallyunsure, has such a hate-on for Stony Brook that she would advise you to attend Death Valley Community College over SB.

Yes, one potential advantage of SB is that she isn’t there.

haha, sb-hater haters. i’m NOT the only one by far, check out other posts  i don’t deny it. i hate sb more than anywhere else in the world.

and of course, these rando posters completely ignore that i didn’t even say anything bad about sb here. no worries, i’ll just keep doing my thing and they’ll do theirs.

but still uminn has a great reputation, regardless of what the sb people say.

“i hate sb more than anywhere else in the world.”

You mean more than Death Valley with no water? You mean more than Antarctica without a jacket? More than a rain forest without mosquito repellent? More than solitary in a super max prison?

I know someone who graduated from SB and loved it.

I wonder if there is anyone from Cornell who hated it and transfered out (yes, that does happen!), but can’t let go and just continuously blasts Cornell on the College Confidential site? Probably not because I assume they have maturity levels of at least a 13-year-old, unlike the poster here.

just warning them, and your insults mean nothing. i don’t care for sb grads, remember?

PM me if you have a personal issue with me. i’m not the one clogging up others’ posts with hatred for someone less than half my age (even more pathetic, no? at least i’m in college). THAT is immaturity. neither of you actually answered any part of the OP’s question. bravo, sb alumni, bravo.

Thank you every one .
U of U is Uni of Utah .
I am an Out-states student so tuition does mean a lot to me.

I have heard that internship/job scene is good at stony brook because its near to NYC.
Also rank wise stony is above others.

Can you tell me what is the quality of education in these institutions.

quality of education for sb is (surprisingly) high for CS. they’re actually ranked pretty high. cost is really cheap, even for OOSers. sb is about 45 mins - 1 hour away from nyc by train, but there is a train station on campus. reputation - i think i answered that before lol

it’s really about how happy you will be. if you have the chance to visit, i would visit all of them and see where you like the best if cost/ranking aren’t very different

Ironicallyunsure, you are hoping that your Cornell reputation will mean something. It is not reputation of the college, but your college performance that will determine job search or graduate school admission. There are many bright students whose parents cannot afford to pay the private universities.

^ many private schools will give you amazing FA if you are truly deserving of attending. my boyfriend is a prime example. he also goes to cornell and will be graduating with less than 5k in debt. why? because they wanted him and knew that he would only come if he were given a good FA package.

^ too long to bother reading the whole thing, so just going to say that you’re right that we ARE really full of ourselves, but we deserve to be. your jealousy is cute, though. thanks for taking the time out of your life to write so much about someone who obviously bothers you. i appreciate the attention

sidenote: i receive a lot of PMs about sb, so actually tons of people “give a hoot” about what i have to say
have a nice life!

PMing you because you are being childish and i’m above that. thank you for making an account just to talk to me

and OP, i’m very sorry that your thread has been torn apart by bitter sb students/alumni. i think i was the only one who actually answered your question. maybe this is a good indicator of the type of people you can expect to encounter should you end up at sb. best of luck with your decision

Great post Darkshadow.

I visit this site because my son is thinking of attending SB so I am trying to get information. Unfortunately, on just about every post I get the same thing over and over again from the same poster - SB sucks, I transfered to Cornell, I am great and smart because I go to Cornell, my future is secure because I go to Cornell, I pity anyone who is stuck at SB.

Complete waste of time. Why does she do it almost one year after leaving? Who knows. Maybe a psychologist could figure it out.

This is my last post on this matter. Ignoring her is the only way to go.

thanks guys! and no worries, i will happily keep my secure future and social circle without feeling badly about it. i realize not everyone can have these things, but don’t hate me cause you ain’t me.

good luck with the college search, ruby. you seem like a good parent and i’m genuinely sorry that you got the wrong impression. despite what you may think, i am only trying to help prospective students. there are both good and bad things to stony brook. you will get the good things from other people and i’m providing the bad things. if it’s not me, it’ll be someone else. but i really do wish you the best (even though i’m guessing it doesn’t mean much to you), because you seem like a concerned parent.

darkshadow, i hope you have a wonderful life full of state school kids and employers that you absolutely adore out in the “real world”, and i hope that that will make you a better person like you claim it will.

I don’t want a part of the flame war, but I’m going to say that if you want a real “college experience”, stony brook is not a good choice. If you want to commute and just learn (or sit in your room and study all 4 years), it’s not that bad but don’t come to SBU expecting anything close to van wilder - think more along the lines of schindler’s list.

my simple fact is i am transferring out of stony brook to UMN for computer science major.
not because UMN is better for this major, and deep down computer science is probably the worst in its IT department the other programs like chemical engineering and mechenical engineering which ultimately place computer science at a comparably bad position. but keep in mind that UMN is a much bigger school and its Carlson school and its Bio programs are ranked very high among the nation, this may help you when looking for a job and its employer who has more likely heard about UMN because the overal reputation.
while attending SB, i noticed that students who generally like the faculties here. computer science program is good for me at SB so far and this is pretty much the only thing still bothers me about whether or not to transfer. other than that, social life is pretty bad and there are many students who are just numbers and unless you enroll into the majors like AMS, CS, PHY,PSY you will not believe this is a top 50 public university. my suggestion is if you are near long island and you are definately aiming computer science this school is probably not a bad choice, otherwise if you are like me who’s out of the country or state and who is going to pay OOS tuition anyway, you really need to think at least twice before come here. you are not going to make any friends, because OOS students are a very small portion here and local people i can only see they treat this university like a high school and hang out with their HS friends most of the time. my roommate who comes from Nevada and i think he’s more lonely than i am because at least i still get to hang out with people from my country.if you are instate and there isnt much choice for you, i suppose at this school is very cheap for that matter not to mention the FA is generally gorgeous.

but personally i would like you enroll in UMN. because i am going there, PM me if you’ve decided.
