I did not get any financial aid this year because they said I made too much. I had to work extra this year because my mom got sick and was unable to work, she ended up in the hospital for several month. She also did not have insurance so she was unemployed and no insurance. I had to work extra last semester to help her pay her bills. Now I don’t know what to do. I really want to finish school, but I was turned down, and I am still trying to help her.

Please help me!!

Dear Appeals Committee,

I am Katria, a sophomore at ___, and I am requesting a second chance and for you to please re-evaluate my eligibility for a Pell Grant and FSEOG due to my financial hardship.

Back in November, my mother was bit by a spider and became very ill. She was in the hospital for the next three months. She later ended up going back to the hospital to have heart surgery. Due to the problems she had with the spider bite along with being in the hospital, she was unable to work at that time. She has just recently returned to work, however, she is only able to work part time. While in the hospital she accumulated several hundred thousand dollars in medical bills, with no medical insurance, and is unable to receive any financial assistance.

I continue to reside in , however, I am having to work extra hours to pay my bills along with helping my mother pay hers in . I understand that me working so much has jeopardized my grades and that I’m definitely going to have to study harder. Now, I feel as if I may not be able to make it through college. Due to not getting a pell grant and /or the FSEOG, I am having to work more hours, along with taking more difficult courses. I have always wanted to graduate from ____ and thoroughly appreciate the opportunity to attend this college.

My goal is to earn a degree in ________. Without financial aid, I lack the financial ability to do this. I’m a hard working student and this semester will prove so. My education is of paramount importance to me and I take my future very seriously.

My mother simply can not financially assist with my college education at this time. I am convinced that with the help of this committee I will be able to finish my college education. I want to express my sincere appreciation for giving me the opportunity to explain my financial circumstances and to let you know that I do not take my education for granted. I am looking forward to hearing from you and hope to receive good news. Thank you for your time in this matter.
