PLEASE HELP! Minor Crime = rescinded admission??

Okay, this isn't for me, but for my friend. I'm very worried for him because he's a really great guy.

This past week for April Fool's day, he hacked into our school district's intercom system and played some song for 15 seconds. Everyone thought it was pretty harmless, and all in good fun, but our school administration thought otherwise.

Apparently, it's a federal offense to hack into a system like this. They told him that they will notify all the school's he got into (UCLA and UCB). What's going to happen?? Will UC's take this very seriously and rescind his admission??

federal offenses, even if misdemeanors, are not minor. This could very well affect his admission, yes.

Have him talk to the administration and maybe work out a deal, such as being the computer science teacher's assistant or something. Or, you could do what my school did when a similar situation emerged and have the whole school stand outside of the principal's office.

This sounds pretty serious; I agree with talking to the administration and maybe UC

Playing a song on the school intercom is a federal offense?

This is silly.

Yeah that's pretty ridiculous.

Talk to the admissions counselors. They, unlike your school administration, are human.

I know quite a bit about such matters, and there is almost no chance that this prank will affect your friend's admissions. Much worse happens. College admissions folks understand senior pranks, alcohol experimenting etc. That said, your friend should crawl into his principal, counselor etc. with apologies and ask that it not be reported negatively to his colleges.

If he explains to the UC ad com what happened, I can't see his admission being rescinded. It seems too ridiculous to have his acceptance letter taken away.
