Please Help My Son! He's a wreck!

I also thought thinking ahead to Junior/Senior year is a good idea. The school that fits an 18-yr old may not fit a 21-yr old quite as well. Considering that you can always transfer is NOT a good approach. Not only could the student lose some credits in the transfer process (perhaps resulting in the need for another semester), but a lot of great friendships are formed freshman year. One of my kids transferred, and getting credits transferred with him, making new friends and getting adjusted to a new school was a lot more stressful thatn anticipated. It's not the end of the world if a transfer is necessary, of course, but it's not an easy solution.

If he's not sure which major he wants yet, selecting a school with the widest range of possible majors might be a strong positive factor too.

Visiting the campuses again would be good, if possible.

Two great choices -- he can't go wrong with either one.

meco - I just found this thread and was going to echo about the small campus. A good friend's son started at Elon and transferred to UVa after freshman year because he couldn't stand being in the middle of nowhere and never being able to do anything outside of campus. But it appears he came to that same conclusion on his own, so congrats!

Sewbusy: I think you hit the nail on the head. My son loved the idea of small classes and getting to know your professor, etc. However, he was concerned about the lack of a college town, less school spirit, etc. Athens, GA is very much like Charlottesville, a wonderful college town. Also, he is into music and Athens has a great music scene.

JustaMomof4: I hope things work out for your daughter. FLVDAD is right on. We all have stories like he described........I hope next year your daughter will be one of those stories.

On another note, I've kinda hijacked my son's account (he's moved on) .... I'm becoming addicted to this site.

Thanks again everyone!
