Freshman year, I got an office referral for having my iPod out during a biology quiz. However my teacher knew I didn't cheat or anything, and she informed our principal that. I was supposed to receive at least one day of in school suspension, but I only got an office referral because I didn't do anything wrong. Other than that, my school record is flawless. Could this referral affect my chances of getting into UGA or Georgia Tech? Please help!

Don’t worry about it. It’s probably just one of those “school record” things that only impacts your time at school.

When I was in 11th grade, I had my phone taken away for checking the time at lunch. My mom had to come and get it, and it was on my “permanent record” so that if it happened again I’d get a detention.

Nothing ever transpired after that because it’s a mere school policy thing. That’s all it is.

Now if you had gotten in trouble for cheating, that would be another thing. But just getting a slap on the wrist for having an ipod out is no big deal.

It’s up to your counselor whether or not he/she would like to report when the counselor form is submitted. If there wasn’t some serious punishment, it’s unlikely it will be mentioned.

Honestly, since you didn’t get an in school suspension, I don’t think you need to report it at all.

I’ve talked to the counselor, and at first she said that it wouldn’t go on the record, but last week I went to the front office and the secretary told me it would. It’s not on my transcript or anything…but i’m still worried.

By record she probably means your high school’s disciplinary record that they use to track stuff. It’s really no big deal if it’s not on your transcript.

It’s kind of like getting a parking violation at school (guilty of that before). you pay them and they put it in their own records so they know how much they can charge you if it happens again. My college doesn’t know or care about it, and I’m sure yours won’t either, especially since it was in the 9th grade.

It’s not on my transcript, I know that for sure…but i’m still worried about it going on my school record, because the college I wish to attend looks for ISS and referrals in their applicants.
