Please HELP?! SAT cancelled from snow!

This SAT date was the last date colleges would accept and now it’s postponed from snow, and I’m pushing past the deadline. I know I shouldn’t have waited this long to take the exam, but I have been unable to until January because of family issues in December.

Should I email colleges and tell them that my testing date got pushed back? My top choices require SAT II tests, and I really need to take these. Should I call the College Board and see if I can arrange to have my score reports rushed? Do postponed test scores still come out when the scores do for regular testing?

I am so worried that my chances at my top choices are ruined. Any advice would be very helpful!

I’m bumping this because I want to know if I should send emails out to admissions tonight, so I can hopefully get answers in the next few days.

Is the following email okay?

Subject: Missing SAT Subject Tests

Dear ____ Admissions Office:

I recently received an email notifying me of missing score reports, which were in reference to my SAT subject tests. I was scheduled to take these exams tomorrow, January 24th, and I was going to have the scores rushed so they would be submitted in the most timely manner possible. Because of the severe winter weather warning issued for southern Pennsylvania, my SAT testing center has chosen to postpone test day, and I will now be unable to take the exams until February 7th. I do not know when the scores would then be released.

I know that the scores will be coming later than desired, but will the admissions committee still be willing to consider them as part of my application? ______ is my first choice, and I would hate for my application to be jeopardized by postponed test scores after I have invested so much into it.

Please let me know if my SAT Subject Test scores will still be considered for admission to _____ College, despite the delay in their delivery. Thank you for your time, and I am sorry for any inconvenience.

Sincerely,

I have the same question, but you’ll not be the only student in this situation.

Also, your chances definitely won’t be ‘ruined’. At worst they don’t consider it at all and place more consideration on other factors.

Is this the U.S. January SAT?

@albert69 Yes it is the U.S. January SAT. There are supposed to be some severe winter storms tonight on the east coast of U.S. so a lot of test centers have postponed.

@slights32 I’m just extra worried because they are required, and I already received an email from them about missing materials. Hopefully, for the sake of you, myself, and all other students, most colleges will be able to overlook this small snag with deadlines.

I just checked the College Board website and over 100 test centers from Virginia to Massachusetts have canceled for tomorrow so it is likely that you are not the only one in your position. Technically you were already late so I don’t see why two more weeks would change things particularly since the delay is due to a weather emergency.

Scores from the postponed test, even though it will ultimately be taken in February, are still reported to colleges as the “January SAT.” You needn’t worry.

@uesmomof2 @readytoroll Do you feel that I should still email admissions? Or just let it go? Because the materials are already late, I feel the need to reassure that they are in fact on their way.

No, you don’t have to email admissions. There is no actual guarantee on timing for when SAT scores are reported - even if you had taken them tomorrow, they could arrive at the same time as the scores for the SAT you take in two weeks will arrive.

Certainly if it makes you feel better, and the school is small enough so that they might make a note in your file, it can’t hurt. If you had previously submitted scores, you might want to tell them that you are taking the January SAT in general, so just to make sure that they know to consider your latest scores before making a decision. But if you have no other scores for them to be considering, then they are not going to be able to review your application until these scores arrive anyway.

I’m not a college advisor but in general I think it is good to give people notice in advance. I would leave out the question in the 2nd paragraph (“will the admissions committee still be willing . . .?”) as that gives them an opportunity to answer “no” which you don’t want. If they were going to accept the scores from the January test, as ReadyToRoll noted, they should accept the scores from February 7th as it is a make-up date due to a “force majeure.”

@readytoroll I submitted my normal SAT scores, so I am concerned that they will assume I was just negligent to application requirements. I have marked on my common app that I plan on taking the SAT in January, but I’m worried this will go overlooked without an explanation.

@uesmomof2 Thank you for the correction. I will revise it to make it less questioning, and just state that they are coming.

I did not originally rush my SAT scores, but do you think it would be a good idea to call the College Board and see if I can make that change. I read somewhere (on here maybe) that rush scores aren’t really faster, so I do not want to spend the money if it won’t make a difference in the long run.

Should I ask my guidance counselor to send a note along with my mid year reports?

Your letter to the admissions people will be enough. They know that weather situations like this arise, so all you need to do is tell them that you were affected by such a situation. Last year, thousands of students were affected when the Common App blew up right around the ED deadline and the colleges understood.

I may have procrastinated on sending the email. Is this okay?

Subject: Missing Test Scores

Dear ___ Admissions:

I recently received an email informing me that my application is missing my SAT score reports. I just want to inform the office that they will be submitted as soon as possible.

I have sent my SAT I scores, and I was planning to take the SAT IIs this past Saturday, January 24th, but the exam was postponed until a later date because of the severe winter weather. The SAT Subject Test scores will be rushed when available.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for your time.

My daughter also took the SAT on January 24, I am wondering if all the cancellations will affect the curve? If students are making up the SAT on a different date, will Collegeboard combine both dates to make a curve, or will those tests be curved separately?

One of the colleges I’m applying to responded that they will accept the scores but they will not be received in time for review. Does a missing part of the application equate to instant rejection?
