Please help! What do you know about Spanish 114S?

I'm in the third window. There are no options. But I found Spanish 114S which I think is a seminar on Barcelona. I was going to take 104, but there are only 3 spots, so I don't know if I'll get it. Does 114 count towards a major or minor in Spanish? Does anyone know anything about it? Can I do both 114s and 104 since I'm not seeing any seminars or writing classes besides the 3 seats in psychology? Can 114 fullfill the language requirement and be my only Spanish class instead of 104?

Thanks!

Okay, first of all - chill. You look at it as that there are "only 3 spots," but the way you really SHOULD be looking at it is that only 12 spots have been taken. It's a 100-level class, which means that only people who got a 5 on a language AP can take it if they haven't already taken a Spanish class at Duke (aka if they're incoming freshmen) - making it very unlikely that tons of people in your window will even be able to take this (pretty obscure-ish) class. Also, it doesn't count for a major or minor, so that'll weed people out who may want to keep that option open. And FURTHERMORE, most people coming in looking to do "only one Spanish class" tend (I think) to naturally go for 101 or 105...not usually 104. I mean, if you think about it, there are about 6000 undergrads at Duke. This means that of the approximately 5500 students that have already registered, only 12 want to take 104. The chance that of the remaining 500 or so students, three of the ones on line ahead of you will all want that class tomorrow is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY. In all honesty, you will almost definitely get 104. Obviously I can't promise anything, but come on...look at the facts.

But, should you not get it, yes 114S counts for a major or minor (if you care about this, why do you want to take 104?), it fulfills the language requirement, it can be your only Spanish class, and if you want you can go right ahead and take both 114S and 104...nothing's stopping you. It actually looks pretty interesting -- I just happened to learn from personal first-semester-freshman experience that it can be a really bad idea to take a language class at 8:30 AM (I think I posted about it on an earlier thread), but other than that there should be no problem. Don't worry so much. Messing stuff up is sort of part of being a freshman, and you guys aren't as dumb as you seem to think you are when it comes to using those Duke brains for figuring things out on your own.

Thank you so much! I would take 101, but they're all full. I'm not thrilled about 830 am for 114S as that would mean an 830 class every morning, but I took spanish at 710 am this year and managed (I know college is way different!) and one semester wouldn't be the end of the world.

I feel better now knowing I have two options and most likely both will be there. I might just take 114S so I could minor afterall and then take 101 in the spring.

Honestly, thank you so much for your help. I've tried to find these things, but 114S doesn't show up on the language website and under a credit towards a major or minor. This schedule thing is just stressful as all my friends at other schools have met with advisors or seem to have incredibly easy loads. It will all be lifted tomorrow!

First off, thank you again for all your help. I'll take you out to coffee or lunch next year!

Right now I'm in 104 with no spots remaining.
I'm also in 114S for my seminar class.

I'm not really seeing a point of taking 104 in this case, so 114S would fulfill my language requirement and seminar requirement since it's a 100-level course, correct?

In that case, I'll drop 104 (I just don't want to lose it right now) and take Dynamic Earth since that looks interesting and has lots of spots.

Then I can take 101 in the spring.

Think that sounds good?
