Read the newspaper and magazine articles. Apparently you don't understand the passages.

I have the same problem. but my CR has improved since I began doing this....
Read an article EVERYDAY (NY times, Economist etc...) When you do this, put the article aside or while looking at it, analyze it. What is the tone? What is the author implying etc... What is his/her view on the topic? What I mean is, try to apply the actual SAT questions which you would encounter on the SAT on any given passage.

Also, memorize/lookup/understand how to use words you dont know that you encounter while reading articles. If you are short on time, read more articles 2 or 3 a day, and memorize 25 - 30 words a day from Barrons book or PR book, or try Sparknotes 1000 most common SAT words. If you memorize two pages a day (~30 words per page) you can memorize 1000 words in a month. More importantly, use these words in daily life, find a way to do so, that way you can feel comfortable using them in your essay as well. And most importantly constantly think and analyze the articles after you are done reading them. For CR, Reading is not hard, its the critical part of it which throws people off! Do this excercise to improve. So far my CR went from an origional 480 on my first practice test, to a 600 on the one I took yesterday in 2.5 months. With dedication you can bring your CR to the 600's.
