Please Help

Hi everyone, I am currently a freshman at Amherst College in Mass. I am very unhappy with my first semester here and a counselor here seems to think I may have developed mild depression. I am wondering about going to a school where I can live at home (Long Island) for second semester (maybe Stony Brook) and then transferring out of Stony Brook to another school (first choice: Washington and Lee). I have done fairly well here academically, and I got into Washington and Lee last year. Does anyone think this would be a horrible idea? Please bear in mind that I also believe I could be depressed here.

I'm not sure how helpful this will be to you, but I've battled depression most of my life and my first semester here at college seems to be bringing it back. I'm currently in the middle of transferring (hopefully!) to be closer to my family. Honestly: I'd rather be depressed around people who love me, aka: my family. So I understand where you're coming from and I don't think it's a bad idea. If you believe you could still be depressed at home, have you ever thought of a little more intense therapy? (I don't mean to push that or insult you or anything, but it does help, from my personal experience)

Good luck!

is that the liberal arts college, or UMass amherst college, i always get them confused.

Hey, thanks for the advice, I am going to try and exercise all the resources I have here so I think that is a good idea. I am at Amherst College (the LAC) not Umass. Thanks for responses! Anyone else?

bumpppppppp

I decided to reply because we are in the same area; not exactly the same situation.

I go to UMass and I am transferring to W&M in Virginia (hence, the Massachusetts to Virginia connection).

Good luck with transferring; Washington & Lee is a great college; I don't think anyone would have a terrible time in Virgina; Virginia is such a beautiful state; Massachusetts is HORRIBLE.

AS.

Good luck, Andrew. I hope you enjoy W&M! I'm currently at UMass as well, considering transferring...

bumppppppp

I think you made a wise decision! I am currently a first semester freshmen enrolled at Penn State University! I HATED this school so much that people though I was physco! Now, I am getting very depressed and mentally ill! I am also seeking trasfer next semester to Cornell University, SUNY-Stony Brook, SUNY-Albany, University of Hawaii, Syracuse, etc.
I think if you feel really depressed, JUST LEAVE THAT PLACE. It really doesn't matter how many school you transfer. The most important is to get a BS diploma and be happy! (If you are not happy, you will not end up doing well in college!) Good luck with your transfer process!!!

thanks for the advice.
