Please post your stats, regradless of Olin's decision.

Invited!

GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.2 W (darn my small school w/ few, few AP classes)

ACT: 36 composite
SAT: 2290 (800 CR, 780M, 710W...oops)

ECs: Decent...lots of music/tennis/chess/destination imagination
Recs: Good! I think.
Essays: By far MY best out of all the college essays I wrote, which means they were probably borderline decent:)

Invited!

I'll third or fourth that DDR request at CW1 though I'll probably look similar to Eravial and her chickenness.

GPA UW: 3.6ish
GPA W: 5.3ish
Top 8%

ECs: Important ones were Karate (black belt), Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentor, and French Club Treasurer. No math or robotics/sciencey clubs, which I thought might be an issue.

Recs: My PreCal teacher loved me last year, so I assume his was pretty good; my English teacher loved everyone, so I'm not sure what to think. Must've been good since I got in. :)

Essays: Good but not fantastic.

Who's excited for CW? I am! :D

To zhbrass, pchan406, Eravial08, ohnocollegeapps:

Oh my, I love the warm reception of DDR! I'm actually not that good... not MAX 300 level, but I'm decent. :D I was so surprised to come on CC this morning and see all the hype (already) about doing OTHER things at CW. I AM going to CW1, and I hope to get to know all of you!

Shoot, are there no DDRers at CW 2?

Haha well I'm one from CW2 that won't be doing DDR! Coordination? Ha! :D

Actually, I'm pretty coordinated in sports and stuff, but DDR is WAY beyond me. I dunno how everyone does it!

No UPS yet, so rejected. :( (Although I'm still secretly holding out for the "official" decision Monday).

GPA: 4.0 uw/4.3 w Ranked 1/330

ACT: 33

ECs: Theatre emphasized and that was also my passion essay...Been in all 12 plays/musicals since freshman year including lead roles. Other stuff like STUCO, Peer Leadership, Volunteering. No math/sciencey stuff...Nothing extraordinary except maybe state thespian officership and I've been an officer of thespians every year...and STUCO secreatry this year. I guess not enough though...

Recs: Very good, but I believe 1 teacher may have used a form recc. (not my fault though, right!?) Very good though I think

Essays: Looking back, I see I answered the "Why Olin is a good fit for me" as "Why I want to go to Olin." I liked my passion essay better though...I just tried to be truthful without being fancy I guess. Bad idea, they must not have stuck out. =/

Excerpt:

"I think Olin is a good fit for me…no wait, I know Olin is a good fit for me simply because of the feeling I get when I read about it, look at pictures, and visit the website. No other college makes me feel this way. You know the feeling you have about a really big crush on someone? That’s how I feel about Olin. It’s hard to write on paper. The prospect of going to Olin is so exhilarating! I just want to say, “Olin is so cool! I really want to go there!” (But too bad I can’t keep writing that “it’s so cool” over and over again)."

I guess it started out bad...that was paragraph 1. Maybe they thought I was phony...or trying to come off as funny. (I didn't mean to).

Why I think I didn't get in: Essays for one...Not outstanding ECs and my SAT subject tests: 620 chem/650 M1/680 M2. My school sucks...Lame excuse, I know.

Advice for next year's applicants (if this is ever read): MAKE YOUR ESSAYS MEMORABLE AND AMAZING! Also, it wouldn't hurt to study up more for the tests if you know you're not prepared just from school work.

Well good luck and have fun to everyone going to CW! I know that it will be great where ever we end up attending in the fall.

We received the rejection letter today by mail. It isn't all about stats by any stretch. My son's stats:

GPA: 3.92 uw from medicore NJ hs; top 5 of 300
SATs: 800Cr, 750 M, 770 W (11 essay); Math 2, 800; Physics 800
APs: Comp Sci A, 5; Physics B, 5; Eng. Lang. 5
Ecs: FIRST robotics (4 years)--captain, sr. year. Lego League mentor, Vex; NJ State Directors Award for Lego League; Debate, North Jersey Debate League (3 years), captain, sr. year; Math League, Science League, 8 years piano (not very good)
Awards: NMSF, AP Scholar, Bloustein Scholar (NJ)
Essays: Accidentally submitted before he proofread them; obviously, his mistake, cost him big.

We visited 10 or so schools this past summer & fall; Olin was the only one he thought was "awesome." So thought he fit there--this broke my heart.

I feel sad for my fellow FIRSTers. I found out about Olin through FIRST, and I really like the similarities between them. Keep working on your robots (only 2.5 weeks left!) and good luck at your competitions.
Also: @ zhbrass - I'm up for DDR at CW2!

It's not about stats at all.

GPA: 3.89UW/4.41W

SATs: (superscore) 690Cr, 780 M, 750 W (11 essay); Math II, 800; Physics 760 // SAT I single-sitting: 2160

APs: Just the ones reported:
5s - Calc BC, Phys C (M), English Lang, Comp Sci A,
4s - Chemistry

ECs: Ocean Science Bowl, Science Bowl, Quiz Bowl, Rubik's Cube documentary, competitive examinations, school clubs, 2.5 years of research (submitted findings as part of my resume)

Awards: Didn't really talk about awards...

Essays: I wrote them in a stream of consciousness and didn't bother editing. I felt Olin deserved to see me for who I really am. The worst thing that came out of writing this was is that I used the word "demonstrates" way too much and I seemed like I have limited vocabulary :( Embarrassing. I really don't know what to feel about my essays (regarding whether they were good or bad).

My stats aren't spectacular. I seem to have scraped by the first cut regardless, and for that, I am grateful (not to mention excited out of my wits). I wish the best of luck to those awaiting 2/4. Keep in mind that with all that we have done in the last three years, we're definitely college-bound to a school that fits us. No worries :)

inconnu:

Just 2 things...
1. Our SAT I scores are IDENTICAL. For some reason, I find that surprising.
2. You might want to add that you were invited at the top of your post. :P

Oh, I can't edit my post anymore. Crap, haha. Sorry about that. Well, to clarify: I'll be attending CW1

Whoa, our SAT scores are identical as in our superscores and single-sitting scores match? That's pretty awesome!

Any chance that your writing score went from 690-->750? :P

Invited!

SATs 760 M, 800 W, 780 W (superscored)
SAT IIs: Math IIC 780, Chem 770, US Hist 770, World History 780
GPA: 4.1 W, 3.98 UW
APs: 5 on Chem, Spanish, English Lang, US, and World History
ECs: Crew team (team prez), Tri-M, Orchestra, tutoring
College class in Spanish literature, independent study in computer programming. Intel ISEF finalist. (List is not complete or comprehensive by any means)

Essays: I went back and read what I submitted, and I didn't think they were spectacular. I procrastinated on the app, so they were written in the 2-3 days before it was due. Good, but not exceptional or great.

See everybody at CW1!! We need to have a CC meetup. Perhaps as a DDR party, haha. I've never had the opportunity to play, but it looks like it would be really fun.

I got the official rejection today.

ACT:
October 2006 32
April 2007 33
October 2007 32 (10 writing)
34 superscore

SAT October 2006
M720
W620
CR680

SAT II
Math 800
Physics 800
Biology M 630

AP's
Calculus BC 5
AB subscore 5
Biology 5
US History 4
Euro History 3

IB's
Computer Science SL 7
Spanish SL 5

GPA: 4.61 weighted (3.86 unweighted) [IB Diploma Candidate]

Class rank: 20/660 unweighted, 11/660 weighted (top 3%)

Extra-Cirrics: Boy Scouts of America (Eagle Scout and Silver Palm), Anime Club technical support, NHS, FIRST Robotics Team Captain and Lead Programmer. Led several extended backpacking treks in scouts and am senior staff at a local nationally-recognized Boy Scout NYLT leadership camp.

Awards: (the best ones) Masonic Achievement Award (top overall male junior), 2-time USA Biology Olympiad Semifinalist, Eagle Scout and Silver Palm, 7 weeks of semiconductor laser research, 3-time IB Student of the Semester award, 3 week engineering program at the University of Denver and attended the highest Boy Scout leadership camp in the nation.

Not really an award, but I took Calculus III last semester and Differential Equations this semester which is pretty good.

Essays: My English teacher said they were two of the best he's ever seen. I just read them again, and they still sounded great, particularly the "Why Olin?" one.

Let me know by email or another post on this thread if you'd like to see them. My email is core2extremist(at)gmail.com.

Letters of Recommendation: Stellar. Absolutely stellar. My computer science teacher, who was also my FIRST robotics mentor, claimed that he "would be proud to have Robert as my own son." Now that's a letter of recommendation! My Calc III teacher wasn't quite as flattering, but it was still an awesome letter.

Verdict: Frankly, although it sounds egotistical, I don't seen any reason why I wasn't accepted :? I'm guessing its because I didn't have a hook: I'm a white male involved in the typical outdoors and academic clubs. Without any national-scale awards, long-term work experiences or an insane number of extracurriculars, I didn't stand out from the other 999 crazy-awesome applicants. I'm really bummed I didn't get in, but I hope that those of you who did have a lot of fun in my place - especially you CW1 guys with DDR :) I'm one of those chicken-dancers myself ;P

Hi Core2Extremist

your stats are awesome, but maybe the Olin people feel they are too good to be true :-) :)
For example, you are national Bio olympiad finalist, and score a perfect 5 on AP Biology, but on the other hand, you only get like 630 on SAT Bio. Of course, people can make mistakes or something, but having 630 is way too many mistakes. It makes ur application look dubious.

Any way, your stats are awesome, and you will go to a cool university. (Make me feel a little jealous. why there are so many good places in USA? )

Still waiting for my Olin letter in Europe........

I haven't gotten anything yet (probably the snow) so I can still hope (although then again, what are the odds?), but here's me. I'm going to guess rejected:

Tests (never retaken (and for that fact never studied for) anything besides my chem SAT, and I'll add a brief funny story about that at the end):
SAT 2310 (790 W, 760 M, 760 CW)
SAT 2: Chem 630, 760
Math 2: 780
Physics: 780
ACT: Never took it. Walked out after I took the SAT, and said never again. Stuck to it too. Hate those standardized tests

AP's: School's not really into them, so the first I'm taking are actually this year.

GPA: 4.0/ Unweighted.
Actually, on my report to Olin, there was one AB, and they haven't (and I'm guessing won't) see my 7th transcript which holds the 4.0 solid

Rank: 1 of ~600

Main ECs: Rocketry, CC (run and ski), Math Team, Future Problem Solving (Look it up online, its good fun)

Main Awards/Achievements: Lots of Rocketry (NASA SLI, TARC, Independent high altitude stuff and team captain all through), Future Problem Solving Team Comp (1st International, 4th international (twice), State Champs 5 years running), Varsity CC, Varsity Skiing (Capt), pile of math stuff (varsity, capt, and awards in comps), and some art awards

Essays: I'm a decent (although not stellar) writer, think they worked out pretty well. Hated the word limit, but finally made them fit.

Commendations: Great, got 3 (english, physics, and my Art teacher). Strong letters all, w/ lots of glory from physics (top in class/school), and art teacher wrote I was top .5 of 1% he's ever taught (he's taught a good deal of scholastic award winners, and I respect him as probably the best teacher I've ever had, so found it a great honor).

Yeah, me too. Only school I wanted to go to too, but tis life.

Anyway, many congratulations to those who made it.

Regards

Uh, does CC not parse tags? nonstandard syntax?

Actually my dancing does not usually pertain to ddr. I think its really fun except I'm kinda awful at it (I blame that on no practicing). I'm an Irish Dancer (like \Riverdance/Lord of The Dance). One thing I'm good at about DDR is not needing to use my arms (Irish Dancers keep their arms by their sides).....anytime I try to do any other kind of dance my arms usually don't move, so DDR works for me.

CW2 - I'm game for some DDR. You guys can get ready to kick my butt!

Hi all- As Molly said earlier in this thread, it's not just about stats. When it comes down to it, all of you are incredible students and people, yet we have a static number of spots. Tough decisions had to be made, and believe me, we agonized over them. I know this probably doesn't make you feel any better, but please know that those of us in the Admission office have been thinking about all of you this weekend, and we feel for you. We also know that ALL of you are going to get into colleges and universities where you will have fun and thrive.
Yours,
Caitlin

Uh...did anyone else's rejection letter had "Strathomore writing 25% cotton" written really lightly near the top or am i just being paranoid?

What? TritiumKnight, you have been accepted by MIT but rejected by Olin? Is Olin that hard to get in? Makes me so nervous...... I haven't even received anything.
