<p>I'm an Asian Indian. I've places top of my class in grade 9 and 10 and 6th out of 40 in grade 11. I've got straight A's in the 9th and 10th grade and 4 A's 1 B and 1 C in grade 11. I've gotta 760 in Verbal,730 in Math and 740 in Writing. My SAT II scores are forthcoming
I've done a bunch of extracurriculars-
I'm president of the school quiz club, school prefect( equivalent to student council member) ,director of school photography club and maths club and member of the school dramatics club and cultural club.I'm the school quiz team captain. I've done community service work for churches and Lions CLub and Rotary Club, gone for a Tsunami victims march etc.
I've got a whole load of quiz awards (GK contests) and can play the piano ( in fact i have passed Grade 4 Associated Board for the Royal School of Music). I'd been a part of a theatre group for some time. I'm a member of the National Geographic Society and I play soccer for my neighborhood team (I'm goalie unfortunately am gettin getting out of shape) and had played cricket in a local club at one point of time. I've participated in debating at the intra and inter school level.
I have been 3 time school spelling bee champion and won several notable academic awards outside school amongst other things.I've represented the school in various scholarship programs and even won an art award from the Indo-American society. What are my chances of getting into Harvard? Am I good for ANY Ivy?
Will my bad grade 11 scores affect me?</p>
<p>hey ummm I'm waitin.................</p>
<p>Hi.
I've got absolutely no idea, so don't listen to me.
But still, I am sorry to say that the chance doesn't seem too high.
Everything you have seem pretty mediocre.
Mediocre SAT scores, mediocre school records (6th our of 40 isn't too impressive), no major achievement at a high level, no amazing extracurricular talent (Grade 4 in ABRSM is really nothing, I am at the level of Dip.ABRSM and that's even nothing big), club activities and community services are all just mediocre.
Nothing stands out.
No hook.
I can see anything that you are really realy interested in, nothing to indicate that you have exceptional abilities.
Grade 9 and 10 marks are not gonna be very convincing.
Sorry, but Harvard may be a little too high for you.
Lower Ivies may be a little easier, but still a reach.</p>
<p>You ain't got any chance. Sorry. First of all, you are Indian and that's not going to help. As erickangns mentioned, your extracurriculars are weak. However, I would have to say that your SATs are decent. Hey, what school do you go to, or what state? How good is your quiz bowl team, as our's is too.</p>
<p>Isn't it funny that the critical replies are from posters who also have chances threads up...</p>
<p>alright filmxoxo's reply was perhaps the most encouraging and that's saying a lot; anywayz why wouldn't Indian help. I'd still apply for Harvard as I'm probably in the 'what the hell ' group. I'm counting on my pentangelli( five angels of luck) to get me thru. Agreed nothing outstanding, but doesn't Harvard like people who've done almost everything available in a sleepy city in India. BTW maguo1, quizzing here is GK contests and in case ur interested, our teams the best in the city hehe</p>
<p>There are plenty of Asian Americans (namely Chinese and Indians). Your not a very special Indian. If you have the money to pay for application fees, then by all means apply.<br>
And, my school has the best quiz bowl team hands down. What's GK stand for?</p>
<p>Anyone who applies has a chance, including you. As for evalutating chances, that's pretty much impossible... it's Harvard, they do what they want.</p>
<p><em>(thinking of South Park episode where Cartman's on Jerry Springer... "Whatever whatever i do what i want!"... lol)</em> :p</p>
<p>it's pretty lame of you to call her SAT scores mediocre, bro.</p>
<p>Okay.
I didn't mean to offend anybody.
But let's take a look.
Virtually all international candidates, and especially from India, get full marks in math/physics/chemistry.
That's just because American math curriculum is not as advanced as a lot of other countries.
As you know, India is one of the most competitive countries in terms of applying to top American universities.
Verbal and writing would've been up to far only if her math was 800.
760, 800, 740 would've been a respectable score, 760, 730, 740 is not.</p>
<p>That's what I think anyways.
What you need to realise is that acceptance rate for internationals is generally about half the acceptance rate for domestic students at Harvard, MIT, etc.
Especially being Indian, it's particularly difficult, just because there are so many other amazing applicants from India.
So relatively and frankly speaking, it'd be extremely difficult for anybody from India to get into Harvard.
And what I am trying to say is that, yeah, you are okay at all the things you did, but there is nothing that makes you stand out from the crowd, in which case I would argue that you are very unlikely to get into Harvard.</p>
<p>You don't have much of a hook. None of your extracurriculars seem that great, no offense.</p>
<p>I have to agree with erickangnz, but what do I know?</p>
<p>( laughs a lot) !!!!!!!! Hmm u all got my gender wrong . Soumyajeet is a male name ok? ..... btw GK stands for general knowledge and could anyone tell me what is a quiz bowl. Hey I agree that my SAT scores are mediocre in the manner of eric's judgement but its the 2nd best score in the city. Besides, no one I know is applying to Harvard from Calcutta this year</p>
<p>hey</p>
<p>its really hard to evaluate chances, since most of us here are applicants ourselves...we can only give our opinions. </p>
<p>Personally, I kind of agree with the above posters. Just the fact that you are international puts you at a disadvantage. I don't personally know any, but from looking at these threads from last year international applicants who get in usually have a hook, which you don't seem to have. Nothing is for sure though. If you have an amazing essay maybe you'll get accepted.</p>
<p>Sorry, Soumyajeet. I don't know to much about international admissions. However, I have heard that it is much harder. I also have a feeling that quiz bowl and GK are the same thing.</p>
<p>"Besides, no one I know is applying to Harvard from Calcutta this year"</p>
<p>Thats the second best in the ENTIRE city?</p>
<p>awwww ur sooo encouraging..... btw mag hope u took no offence yeah maybe quiz bowl and GK is the same</p>
<p>are you guys crazy?! 760, 730, 740 is a great score. Last year a girl from my country (Bulgaria) got into 5 Ivies, including HYP, + 10 great schools with 730V+760M. Her SAT IIs were similar. Yeah, she's not from India, you might argue, but one of the bulgarian applicants last year was IMO gold medalist and he didn't get into Harvard. So please stop discouraging people without having any idea what you are talking about. You never know if someone is going to get in unless you happen to be an admission officer</p>
<p>go katerila</p>
<p>It's all in the essays....</p>
