Essay:
During the Italian Renaissance era, approximately occurring from 1350 to 1550, the wake of artistic work, great minds and the humanism movement emerged. As stated in A History of Western Society since 1300, Humanism emphasized human beings, and their achievements, interests, and capabilities. The influence of humanism on the visual arts in the Italian Renaissance was a philosophical belief that humans were also a large part of moving forward in society, and not so much about religion. This is not to say, that religion is not important, however this is more so about what humans were capable of and what they could accomplish. Three major contributions that emphasized humanism on the visual arts were patrons who provided money, artists who invoked perfection, and Renaissance scholars.
Patrons can be categorized as philanthropist; people who imbursed money for artists to continue their pieces. For example, during 1508 to 1512, Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the miraculous Sistine Chapel. The Sistine chapel is a catholic landmark, which portrays many stories of the Bible. Under the patronage of the Pope, this beautiful piece was embarked, and is now where the current Pope commences some Masses. Furthermore, Pope Julius patroned many other historic art works, such as St. Peter's Basilica. St. Peter's Basilica is a church located in Vatican City, which Giovanni Paolo Panini had painted. This unique building holds a tremendous part of catholic faith beneath its ground, hence the name. Similar to the Sistine Chapel, many major masses are held at these fine pieces of work. Fortunately, many wealthy members of the Renaissance era allowed these artworks to be made due to their imbursements.
Although many artists were under the patronage of others, this did not stymie them to try to perfect their art. Artists emphasized humanism; making human art important, unlike medieval artwork. For example, Michelangelo's David Sculpture showed many attributes of the human body. Before the Renaissance era, humanistic art was perceived as "soul-less." Items such as robes were put on sculptures to portray the body as weak in pieces of art that involved humans. Eventually, Michelangelo specified every characteristic of David's body on the piece. In addition, Raphael's painting of the School of Athens did not shy away from perfection. The School of Athens represents a broad meaning, but in much detail. Many masters of the era are shown in the painting such as great philosophers, mathematicians, and artists. In truth, the art constitutes a humanistic piece in which the greats learn from each other and collaborate.
Renaissance scholars were people who were specialist in one or many branches of work. Most of the Renaissance artists were scholars, particularly in humanism. For example, Leonardo da Vinci was an inventor, scientist, artists, architect and an engineer; He is widely regarded as the true definition of a Renaissance man. Examples of his work may include art such as The Last Supper, or inventions including war vehicles without horses. He was a very successful man, and had impressive experience in all areas of his work. Leonardo Da Vinci expressed himself in all areas he felt was necessary, he could do whatever desired. Leonardo's work during the Italian Renaissance shows in depth humans flourishing and growing.
Through the ages of the Renaissance era to the modern day now, it has been shown day in and day out that humanism still thrives today. From Leonardo Da Vinci's invention of war-craft vehicles, to the achievements of modern day war-craft vehicles, the hard work of the patrons, artists, and scholars blueprinted the backbone of the modern day humanism.
