Assignment: Can knowledge be a burden rather than a benefit?

Science and technology have unlocked the potential of the human mind to effect great change upon the world. Nevertheless, knowledge can often be a burden rather than a benefit, as the change that accompanies it can be much more harmful than beneficial. This fact is clearly evvident when one considers nuclear power and the ongoing debates in bioethics.

Without a doubt, nuclear power has brought the world an efficiant and fairly reliable energy suuply; however, the disastrous effects of this technology far outweight its boons. For one, through it is efficient, nuclear power does not need to be the norm when other, safer technologies such as solar can be utilized. Secondly, nuclear power is under-maintained and is often riddled with safery concerns. For example, several nuclear plants in the U.S. have been recently cited for concerns; one near San Diego has even been shut down. The additional ***ushima disaster in Japan also demonstrates the severe ramifications of nuclear power, as Japan is now covered with radiation and the fiasco worsens by day.

Debates such as the issue of genomic analysis and human cloning in bioethics additionally prove knowledge can be a burden. Although the screening of human genomes has become commonplace and can pinpoint future illness, many find this technology to be a tension on the mind that can create public paranoia about health. The issue of human cloning also unnerves many in the public and private sectors, as it can be argued that a human clone may not be a "human" in a cultural sense since the clone was not created through means remotely near natural reproduction.

All in all, knowledge can often be a burden rather than a benefit. This truth is demonstrated through an analysis of nuclear power and issues in bioethics. It is thus up to humanity to rid knowledge of its banes and augment its boons.
