Please some advice people of College Confidential!

Hello everyone, i’ve lurked around on these forums for advice throughout my high school career but have never felt the need to make an account until now. Some background on myself (if it matters)

-Asian
-Just finished my junior year of high school
-3.8 GPA
-3 AP Classes and 2 College Classes
-Oregon

So here is my dilemma, throughout my first two years of highschool, i’ve had a perfect 4.0. I don’t mean to brag but back then, taking just normal classes I thought school was super easy! Then, after reading about stuff on the forums I began to decide that I wanted to challenge myself. During my freshman year, I took an honors english class for fun, and sophomore year the only advanced class I took was APHG.

Junior year schedule:
AP Statistics
AP Psychology
College US History
College Chemistry
Advanced English
Precalculus
Health Science (Elective)
Spanish 2

So first semester was my first time getting B’s, i had a B in AP Statistics and College Chemistry. Here’s where I need the advice, during the beginning of 2nd semester, i had to leave school for an extended period of time due to family issues where I had to leave the state… I missed a lot of school during the BEGINNING of the semester and so when I came back I was already in a deep hole because of all my classes being accelerated… I tried my best but some days I would just lose motivation and not do any homework and I truly truly regret it and I know that it is entirely my fault but my 2nd semester I ended up with 6 A’s, 1 C (College Chemistry) and … 1 F (Ap statistics).

To be honest, AP Statistics was just an elective class I took for making my college transcript look better because I was already taking a required math class which was precalculus, but I fell so behind in it at the beginning of the semester and never understood the material enough to the point I ended up with my first F… So my question is, obviously I want to withdraw from the class. At my high school, you have 4 weeks from the beginning of the semester to drop a class and you end up with a W. I looked online and most other high schools (and colleges) do this as well, where if you drop a class after a deadline it just shows up as a W. The thing is, FOR EVERY OTHER SCHOOL / COLLEGE THE W DOESN’T FACTOR INTO YOUR GPA!! Today , I went to talk to my counselor, teacher, and an administrator and they told me a W factors into your GPA as an F!!! They explained something along the lines of that the W is just a “place holder” and that after summer school is over they change the W to an F… This made me super mad because I just wanted a W in AP Statistics 2nd semester and it wouldn’t ruin my GPA and hopefully my other classes would make up for it…

Now some of you may ask, why don’t I just retake the class NEXT YEAR? (Senior year)

My parents are planning to move far away from the school I currently go to and this would mean I would have to move high schools as well. I checked the curriculum guide for the school I would go to if I moved and THEY DONT OFFER AP STATISTICS!! So that’s why I really just want a W so I can move on, if I end up moving i’ll be stuck with an F i can’t retake.

So please, college confidential peeps, give me advice. To be honest, I don’t really care much about going to harvard, yale, ucla, etc. The only thing I want to do is go to a college out of state like a Cal state but i’m terrified this F will ruin any chances. Thank you, and sorry for rambling on, im just super stressed, sad, and disappointed in myself…

EDIT
I forgot to mention, I have already emailed my teacher about it and am waiting for a response, he hasn’t replied yet but I doubt he will help me in anyway because he is really strict about grades.

Also, since i’m transferring schools (most likely), is there anyway for me to ask them to not give me credit for the class since my AP Statistics class was an elective? ( My required math class was precalculus). Is there anyway to take this off my transcript without it factoring into my GPA as an F? I’d be happy with a W but my school calculates it as an F in the GPA!!

Why is this urgent? It isn’t urgent.

You’ll have an F on your transcript so what. It’s not a deal breaker. You earned it, own it. The sun will still rise in the east and set in the west. You will just have to overcome it. Many people do. You can too. The key to success is not to be afraid of failure. Such fear prevents you from taking the calculated risks necessary to live a productive life.

I don’t see any options to erase the F. If you want to demonstrate that you’ve learned statistics, you can take statistics at a college over the summer. You can take it online. None of this will factor into your GPA which will be used by some computer to assess your qualifications for college. You don’t have a bad record, and I don’t see any life path that is closed to you.

Extended period of time is vague. How long is that? If you know you are going to be gone its up to you to do the work while away and to make those arrangements with the teachers. Generally if you drop after the deadline its a F not a W.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
I edited the clickbait header to remove the word “Urgent;” Urgent requires a call to 911; this is not urgent.

If you’re motivated to fix this, consider taking stats for college credit. To give you an example of one option, U of Wisconsin offers it in a self-paced, online format: https://il.wisconsin.edu/catalog/course.aspx?course=U3600-117 Hopefully this could both back-fill the grade on your HS transcript, and give you transfer credit for college without your having to take the AP test.

I’m sure stats would also be available through a community college locally, either in-person or online. This would be much cheaper but wouldn’t give you the schedule flexibility of a self-paced class. At any rate, you have options even if your new HS doesn’t offer stats.

It sounds like you would need to finish the class, one way or another, by the end of your current HS’s summer session if you want the grade to replace. How much time is that?

Thank you everyone for your replies, i ended up talking to my teacher and he let me retake it at a local community college. Thanks again!
