Please tell me how much significant my Leadership Roles are -

Not considering other factors such as marks and stuff, I want to know how much effective these leadership roles of mine are effective for applying to Universities like “University of Chicago” , “Johns Hopkins University” , “Duke” , “Princeton” , “Yale” , “Cornell” and others of this level for a bachelors in Computer Science (my leadership roles aren’t related to my major)
These are my leadership roles -

1 - Organizing Committee Head of Marketing of a social event for 410 underprivileged children .
- Event by - AIESEC (the world’s largest Youth Organization present in 130+ countries)
- (main focus- drawing competition) along with many other small activities
- Marketing budget handled by me - $3000
- Profit in event - $2500
- Amount of money raised - $15000
- Scholarships given - $3000

2 - Head of Design (of marketing material and stage and other stuff) for the above event.
- also, the actual Chief Designer (designs applauded by Times Of India [marketing partner] - the world’s highest selling
newspaper)

3 - Team Leader for Marketing for Outgoing Student Exchange conducted by AIESEC in Surat
- 12 (and 6 scheduled for later) students sent for international internships (Social and professional) during my term.
- selected for this position in 2nd quarter of 2015 - the most intense time of our operations .

4 - House Prefect in 9th grade (all students in our school are divided in 4 houses)
- Essentially the Leader of all the sports and academic (quizzes, etc.) teams but with only the House Captain having an
authority above me.
- My house came 2nd in overall performance in everything from sports to academics.

5 - House Captain in high school for the whole year - 2014
- Essentially the final leader of all sports teams (indoor and outdoor) and academic teams( quizzes, etc.) of my house
- My House got 1st position as an overall champion in everything from sports and academics under my leadership
(which happened for the first time after years of low performance under other House captains) .
- For the first time, due to my (and also 2 other house captains’) efforts, our school surpassed every other school in the
south region of our state (and most of the rest of the state and country) in sports achievements by students.

6 - In onsite organizing Committee of National Youth Conclave (one of the biggest of its kind in India) held to empower
youth of India (my country) with several eminent speakers (World famous ones)

7 - In onsite organizing committee of “Global Village” by AIESEC in Surat- an event where we brought people from
30+ different countries to represent their culture in our city.

8 - In onsite organizing committee of a social event for 2000+ children (event same as the one mentioned in 1st point, just
on a 5 times larger scale [everything from scholarships to profit and the money raised] )

9 - Leader in my school music band (Drummer) .

Just telling , I’m also a state topper in Science (14th national rank) and English(State topper with 20th national rank) Macmillan 2014 exam (held by UNSW - Australia) and also 2nd in Maths (17th National rank) in my state in 2014 for the same.
Also, I was 2nd in state in National Cyber Olympiad.

Sounds interesting and impressive - assuming you have the grades and test scores, you should be in the ball park and even stand out from the pack if you can get a letter of recommendation from AIESEC to verify that your contribution(s) were indeed substantial and exceptional. Your school LORs will speak to the leadership you provided there.

Do you really think the Ivies will appreciate this??
I used to think this type of leadership is common for people applying to the Ivies .
Please tell me I’m wrong…

They’ll appreciate it if you did something significant with that leadership role. If you made an impact (in the school, in the classroom, in the community etc.), then the leadership role is very significant and your impact will be reflected mostly in your teacher and counselor recs.

You go to Hogwarts?

@viphan lol

Teacher and counselor recs aren’t going to reflect your leadership in the community. That’s why you need the LOR from AIESEC. The ‘in school’ activities are ‘usual’ school leadership - equal to student govt. leadership in the US and don’t particularly stand out. It’s the outside activities that sound like they might differentiate you.

In the social event that I mentioned, we gave scholarships to 15 children worth $3000 . And also the same happened in the last one that I said happened on a bigger scale. And the whole event was organized from start to end by a team of 3 people including me . So, is it something that would stand out?

And also, I assisted in sending 12 people to international internships through AIESEC. So, will that stand out too?

I really don’t think my D would have been admitted to Cornell if not for excellence & leadership in her EC’s (class president, varsity sport captain 3 years, vice president of theatre association, etc.), Her academic stats were “below average” for the typical admit there. They want students who are going to be actively involved with campus & community.

Just asking… What does ‘‘EC’’ mean ? Coz this is not a term used in India, so I’m unfamiliar with it.

And ya… @csdad, can you share the profile of you D that got her admitted to Cornell ??
Only the significant part would do.

EC= “extra-curricular” . She had a 31 ACT, 2040 SAT, SAT subject test scores were mediocre. Top 10% in class rank, took the most rigorous classes offered. However she had a great deal of leadership (already mentioned in above post), along with many awards, achievements in her ECs. Had great letters of rec. & must have done well on her essays. In addition she applied to the College of Human Ecology, whose accpetance rate is highest among Cornell’s colleges (I think) & she applied ED

Thanks @csdad
