Please tell me if I have a chance!

I’m currently a senior in high school in New York. It’s not the most competitive high school, but I’ve done what I can as far as taking a rigorous course load. I applied to Boston University RD. It originally was not my first choice, but as I have done more research on it BU has proved itself to be my dream school. I was recently accepted to Siena College, Iona College, and St. John’s, so I have back-ups. So far I’ve only been rejected from NYU, but was honestly thankful because I don’t think it was the right place for me. I also applied to Fordham University, Binghamton, and Northeastern. I’m not very hopeful for Binghamton or Northeastern , but it’s worth trying! Anyhow, I would really appreciate some feedback for BU.
–Thanks!
I applied to the College of Arts and Sciences for Linguistics

I also have faith that my Spanish and English teachers wrote me great recommendations as well and my guidance counselor. And I’m proud of my essays.

Thanks again to anyone who takes the time to read this and reply. I really appreciate it!

Wow we have like the same SAT! I have a 1790 though and math is my weak point too at a 560…but it went up from a 470 LOL so im thankful…I heard from someone that BU might translate ACT scores into SAT scores and put it all together for a super superscored test…so if your ACT math was maybe higher it could help you…A school I applied to did this that that makes me look a little better with a 1820.

I think the only thing holding you (and me) back is our scores…but you have the advantage of having neither of your parents go to college. When looking at these chances that’s something that sticks out because it’s something colleges actually care about–its something that seems unimportant but usually it is. Race is another example of that. It depends on the school, but that fact may help you. I’ve seen a lot of girls at my school get accepted/rejected based on this…

I’m applying RD too! I have 670CR 720M and 580W and I want to study anthropology. Because you’re a linguistics major they’ll put a lot of weight on the essays that you submit and your recommendations from your teachers. You might want to consider submitting a copy of the article(s) you had published in a local newspaper. That looks really good! Being a first generation college student will really help you too.

I agree with ALLIEISAWESOME on the race thing. the majority of college students these days are white females who all achieve at high levels. I was deferred from a school in favor of a less qualified minority student that I know. No matter what you’ll go somewhere you love and you’ll have a blast!

Hi, I just wanted to correct something since we asked our admission rep this question. BU will not translate ACT scores to SAT scores and super score them. They will superscore the SAT-taking the best scores from different test times, but they will not super score the ACT at all. My DD did get in ED and she had a 30 ACT, 3.6 unweighted GPA, rigorous course work (1 AP fresh and soph years, 3 junior year and 3 senior year), great recs and essays. First generation is huge and I agree, send in some articles you’ve had published! GOOD LUCK!

Thanks everyone! This feedback really helps calm my nerves. I have been in all honors and AP classes since the seventh grade and really hope the work will pay off. I’m just so concerned about my test scores. It’s always Math that brings me down. My GPA would be a lot better if I were better at Math. @ALLIEISAWESOME, my SAT Math went from a 480 to 540! I think my GPA is above average though for BU, so I hope they take four years worth of work into more consideration than one standardized test. Good luck Everyone!

My d had similar SAT scores (600 V, 620 M, 600 W), a 3.6 unweighted GPA, and a 29 on her ACT. She only took AP Computer Science, Chemistry, and Stat, as well as Calculus, Adv. Physics and Adv. Comp. Science., along with the normal history, english, and other requirements. She applied to CAS for Computer Science ED and was accepted. Hope this helps.

Thank you! It definitely does help. I’m in the top ten percent of my graduating class too. I don’t know how much emphasis they’ll put on my rank. How much emphasis do they put on alumni? I have a cousin who graduated BU in 1989 and I put that on my application.
