Chances and Areas in Need of Improvement

Boston University is my number one choice but my parents will not let me apply ED because of financial reasons (two kids going to college at the same time). However, I also feel I may be rejected or deferred to the General Studies college because of my SAT scores (I took the test yesterday and really do not think I did too well). One of my friends goes to Boston University and only says great things about the school and the opportunities the students have.

Your a shoe-in. If you do really well on your SAT's, consider applying for one of the full scholarships, MLK or trustees.

Don't worry about not applying ED. It doesn't help or hurt your chances.

You're definitely in!

Thanks for the positive feedback! All I could think about last Saturday when I was taking my SATs was how much it seemed like Boston University was slipping away. How much value does BU place on SATs over GPA, rank, extracurricular activities, leadership, etc.? I know my friend that was accepted to BU three years ago had a fairly decent SAT (1250), although I do not think her GPA or rank were similar to mine. However, she really loves the school and encourages everyone in my district to apply there lol. Once again, thanks for the input!

I also forgot to ask, do you think I will be deferred to the General Studies program? I do not really know anything about this program although I do want to go to the College of Arts and Sciences. One student at my school last year was rejected from BU with a high ACT score (31) although her GPA was not very good (plethora of C's and maybe some D's).

awesome ECs simply marvelous! I think too that u r IN! :)

Yeah you're in for sure.. seven people applied to BU from my high school this year and the only one who didn't get in had the highest SAT score lol.. It's all about being well-rounded and he has crappy grades and he's lazy

Thanks, your reassurance is comforting :) Is the November SAT test date too late to apply RD to BU?

you can take them up till december! i sure did :)

You'll do fine. When did you go to Business Week? I went 2 years ago but forgot to put it on my applications.

I just went last year for Business Week 2006. It was really insightful and provided me with a lot of information about college admissions. Plus, that was the most freedom and taste of college life I had gotten up until that point. But this summer I'm going to the Governor's School of South Carolin at the College fo Charleston and taking "Holocaust in Film" and "American Collective Memory of World War II," which I'm really looking forward to :)

bro take this summer offer.. I think you earned it. What I would do with a record like yours would be just finish every single one of my applications completely over the summer and not have to worry about a thing all school year. I didn't even begin to think about colleges before September of senior year

Thanks! When do you guys think the applications for next year will be available? I won't be able to start on my applications until I get back from Governor's School (July 7) but I will definitely try to finish them up so I can three of my current / former teachers glance over them. Maybe I am getting paranoid lol...my friend (whose sister will be a junior at BU this year) said she thinks I will be fine but I'm keeping my fingers crossed; next spring can't come quickly enough :) Also, does BU encourage students to send a resume or "brag sheet"? I ask this because I only listed the really important accomplishments for my extracurricular activities and community service projects (some things I did not mention but want to mention on my application: I had excellenct help from two professors at the Duke University Medical Center for the Malaria campaign, there were more things I did under Amnesty International USA, and some other unique and important jobs / responsiblities under Youth Action Council, since it isn't a common activity). Even if I do not receive big scholarships, grants, etc. from BU I really think it is the school I can see myself at for the next four years.

are u making 4s or 5s on your aps??? some schools aps aren't even tough... and scores show. THE QEUSTION IS NOT, IF HE "IS IN"..... HE NEEDS A HIGH ENOUGH SAT TO GET A FULL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP... PERFEREBLE MATH AND CR- 1400-1600, NOT 1200.

I think he'll get in, but I highly doubt he'll get a full ride.

maybe u should aim higher than BU
not that BU is not a good school though

I am also applying to the University of South Carolina, Furman University, Syracuse University, Fordham University, Wake Forest University, New York University, Emory University, and the University of Chicago. However, the vibrance of the programs and the diversity of the campus at BU are simply captivating (diversity is crucial to education and life in my opinion). Thanks for the reply!

Wake Forest? If diversity is what you want, avoid WF. From what I hear, the school's extremely racist.

-The Diverse Coot66

Wow, really? I have heard some negative things about Wake Forest being predominantly white, etc. but that is an interesting point.
