I know but UNC Charlotte is more like a back up… I really want to go to NC State or Virginia Tech… I have no problem with UNCC but I want to know my chances before I commit?
I think your ECs are pretty good, especially you started a lot of things. But in my opinion it’s more about how you present your activities (in your essays, descriptions, rec) than about what you actually do. But no one on CC has read your essays…so my point is that every “chance me” is mainly based on test scores. For now I would say just show some interests in Virginia tech and NC state. You should write emails to them saying how much you love them. Also keep up your senior grades! For your scores those schools are not that big of a stretch
If deferred, take steps to make sure these schools know you want to attend. All things being equal, they will favor those who they know will accept their offer over those they are unsure about. If you have a clear favorite, write that school a note telling them you have been accepted elsewhere but you much prefer X university. If they extend an offer you will go. Don’t do this unless you are sure. Also, if your scores and grades make the school realistic for you, you can go to your guidance counselor and ask if that person would put in a good word for you. If you are certain you’d go no matter what, the GC can tell that to the school. That carries more weight than your note because it puts the school’s reputation on the line with regard to that particular university. Don’t make the request unless you know for sure.
I will add, however, that your grades in key classes are questionable. Getting a C in Calc AB is puzzling for someone interested in engineering which is obviously math intense. The fact that you did not list the score that you got on the Calc AB test makes me think you did not get a 5. These schools may wonder if you can make it through a rigorous engineering curriculum. You may have tons of ECs but they don’t inform that question. The bottom line is that Calc AB is nothing compared to what you will encounter in an engineering program in a good school. How do you plan to overcome that obstacle?
But could you be happy there? If not, you shouldn’t have applied (in favor of a more palatable backup); if yes, then there’s no problem, really.
I have some familiarity with UNCC (and am friends with a few faculty members there, in fact). It’s a decent school—it’s dealing with problems incident to a legislature that’s (warning: unfiltered opinion ahead) overly and senselessly hostile to the entire idea of public higher education, but that’s not all that unusual these days (and NC State and Virginia Tech are facing the same headwinds). Relax. If you get into Va Tech and/or NC State, you can go there and it’ll be fine. If not, you can go to UNCC and it’ll be fine. You’re actually in a good place right now. A very good place, in fact.
