Bump!
The past couple years whenever I needed money I just asked my parents for it. Now that I’m gonna be 250 mi away (nj) I can’t do that.

Am I going to have to work to have spending money ? When I say spending money I mean 95 % food and 5% on shopping or whatev.

(Assuming no car/w meal ticket).

1)Frugal no social life -$25wk
2)One date a week/ a few outside meals -$100week
3)Heavy socializing out 5 nights a week - $300 week

Get a debit card so you can take out whatever you need.

Slighly unrelated, but which bank would you recommend? I keep hearing that TCF is terrible but its ATMs seem to be all over campus.

Ok i guess I’ll be one of the ppl with $25a week xD

how is the walking at UIUC in the weather?
is walking 1.5 - 2 mile in winter out of the question?

My recommendation is to get an account with Chase Bank. That is what I did for my son. I am able to deposit money for him into our local branch without any hassles whatsoever and their ATMs are very convenient to campus, also. When I set up my son’s account, they were offering $200 for a $2,000 deposit if you kept the account open for 6 months. That was a no-brainer, $200 in free money. Plus with their student accounts, they do not require a minimum balance and there are no service charges. I checked my son’s spending and for the year, he spent $888—that is about $100 PER MONTH. Most of his friends are pretty broke, so he had no reason to spend money either—and he was still able to have a pretty active social life.

^ok I will consider taking up Chase.

Thanks!

For most of the time, as long as you have winter clothes including coat, hat, gloves, and boots if snow present, it is not a problem. However, sometimes the temp can get real low, like below 12 degrees Fahrenheit and once in a great while even below zero. You usually do not have a risk of that happening except from last part of Dec through early Feb and you are not there between mid-Dec and mid-Jan. If you get those real low temperatures it becomes a very good idea to take the bus except for short distances.

Chase is a good option if near parents house. Our D is going with Bank of America for Similar reasons. Close to home, easy on-line banking, no maintenance fees if you use electronic statement and ATM instead of tellers. BOA ATM is conveniently located in the Illini Union. Plus, since our retirement accounts are at Merrill Lynch (owned by BOA) we qualified for platinum services which means BOA will refund up to $100 per year of ATM fees charged by other banks for using their ATM.
