I know this must have been talked about before, but a quick search yielded nothing.

Ds will have a work-study job and put half to tuition and save half for expenses. I assume the college just cuts him a check that he can cash right there? If that's the case, does he even need a bank account on campus?

No checks - the school will autodeposit to tuition and whatever bank account you tell them to.

For other purposes, you can cash checks up to $100 in the bookstore. Having either a Wells Fargo or Northfield Bank account are the most convenient banks to have, though.

Yeah, his paychecks will be autodeposited to his account. I just kept my checking and savings accounts at my regular bank at home. When I go to Target, I can pay with my check card and get cash back, but honestly, I haven’t ever needed to use that option–there’s no need to carry around large amounts of cash on campus because just about everything is either free or paid for with our OneCards.

So they’ll deposit even to a bank back home?

Yep. Online banking has made things pretty easy for me this year (I use Bank of America). Just make sure your son knows where to find his account number and routing number and he’s good to go.

Ironically, he’s interning in a bank this summer, so I think he’ll be light years ahead of me. I like to deal on a cash-only basis. I’ve never even had a debit card or ATM card. I’m sure he’ll embrace the 21st century and figure this out for himself, lol.
