Point Park Audition Process

Which may be for the best.. gives us less to agonize about! CaitiMo707, I see you're from CA, are you doing the LA Unifieds?

Piano Placement Test?
btw....what did you audition with?

Hi as a mom of a MT student, we are auditioning on Feb. 28. Does the student need to be able to dance well if they are able to sing and act well? Also if anyone has suggestions for websites or books for monologues, it would be greatly appreciated. My son and I are very new to all of this. Thank you.

Not to say that dance is not considered in the process at all, because I am not sure that is true, but they did tell us at my audition (november 8) that they weren't expecting us to be amazing dancers and that they just wanted to see where we were at. I know for a fact that there are beginning level dance classes for the MT's, so if you have not had dance training, the school will certainly be able to accommodate you. Just do your best and show that you are willing to try and ready to learn. They will pick up on that. Break a leg!

Hi! I'm new to posting but i've been around the site for awhile.

I auditioned on Jan. 24 and I was one of twelve called back. There were about thirty total that day. Does anyone know what the chances of getting accepted are if you were called back??? I got a great feel from the school and I'm really really REALLY hoping to be accepted!

Thanks! :)

Hi, Blarney...from one Mom to another ... We will also be at the Feb. 28th Audition with our som. (He was supposed to go on Nov. 8th but was hit by a car in his school's parking lot). Luckily, he only had a concussion but no broken bones, etc. so we re-scheduled. My son has read many plays and chose his own monologue --- your S should be familiar with the whole play (don't just get monologue books). He also has asked several of his theater teachers for opinions and has had the good fortune of working with a well-respected theater teacher who recently retired. But, honestly, your S needs to feel comfortable with material that he chooses. If he can speak to drama/theater teachers at his scxhool and get some guidance it would probably be helpful. I hope this helps. Maybe we'll see each other at Point Park!

msbtysw:
couldnt really tell you the odds, I dont think anybody really knows! who ever the school wants, they will take. But getting a callback, as you know, gets you one step closer to being accepted! and if you got a good feel from the school, all you can do is pray for the best! on my audition day, there were 22 people if im not mistaken, and 7 got called back (3 girls, and 4 boys). I know of one girl who was not accepted, and I was one of the boys accepted, but that is all the information i know!

Thank you for the information Maril. It will be nice to know that other people are in the same boat. Has your son taken dance? This is the only thing that worries me about the auditions. He is able to sing and perform well, but has not had dance. I hope that this is not a major factor in the audition process. Anyway, I believe that where he ends up is where he is meant to be. It is just a fine line of motivating young men (daughters are so different) and where you let go. I will be glad once we know where he is going.

Some schools rate the dance portion of the audition more heavily than others. From my observations, I was say that PP probably is on the medium to heavier weighted spectrum.

My best advice for a non-dancer doing a dance call - try to relax; pick up as much as you can during the demonstrations - try to be very specific - hand position/head angle/body position, etc. Then just put yourself into the dance, and let your personality shine through.

Hey guys. Just to let everybody know, the PPU dance audition will NOT be the same thing every time. I auditioned on January 24th and we did a jazz combination that was fairly difficult and quick- paced. If anyone has any other questions, I am in touch with many PPU students and hopefully could help you out!

As the mom of a late bloomer into the MT process, I am learning so much from the posts on here. I just wish we had started this a year ago. Anyway after getting blown out of the water with our first school, we are now getting saavy and are using a voice coach and currently looking for an acting coach. I just don't know if he was a big fish in a little pond or that competition is fierce. Anyway here are some questions..
If you try out for MT, can they slot you in music or theatre if you dont make the cut?
Would the same go for Temple?
Does anyone know of the music programs at IUP? I know it is not on same level as these schools, but a good state school with music programs?

He is aksing for help with monologues-spent alot of time at Barnes and Noble.
What do think of these? From my understanding you should avoid "books" and read plays. we picked up Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and Springs Awakening. I also picked up a monologue book just to have. He is also meeting with drama teacher to get some ideas. Can you get through these auditions well without a coach?

Also can you recommend second tier schools in ny/nj area? We are from PA and have applied to most of the second tier schools here and waiting/auditioning over next six weeks.

Does anyone know how Hofstra program is and the financial aid they may give?

So many questions and so little time....................Any help appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!

Point Park may offer acceptance in acting to students who audition in MT. They do not have a music degree, so that is not an option at PP. I don't know if Temple accepts people into alternate programs.

It is very important to know the entire play your monologue comes from. However, sometimes (especially since your son is late in the game)people work backwards - find a mono from a mono book, THEN read the play. Just make sure you are looking at monologue books where they all come from published plays, and aren't just written as monologues.

There are students who make it through this without having specific coaching; however, that depends both on the raw talent, and how valuable their acting experience has been thus far. (For example, if you've worked with an excellent director and you have good innate talents, you might be far more prepared without coaching than if the shows you have done have had so-so directors and staff.)

Hi its Blarney again,
Just a quick question. I got some great feedback from the top school we did not make it into and needs some professional coaching. I am having trouble locating someone in our area. If anyone has some suggestions for North Wales/Montgomeryville/Harleysville/Lansdale area, this would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me privately.
Once again, thank you for all your help, listening, and keep on singing.........

Hi. I’m new here. My daughter auditioned at PPU for the dance program last weekend. It was the last one for incoming freshman. If anyone has been through this process I’d appreciate any info. Lots of questions…how long before results come and any idea what type they look for? Do you know how many they let into the program?? Thanks for any help.
