Can poker capture and improve the minds of young Americans? Charles R. Nesson, a Harvard law professor, insists that it can.</p>
<p>He has set up a group called the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society with a clear mission: "the legitimation of poker." While Congress has severely restricted online poker, Mr. Nesson and colleagues are creating an open, online poker community that hopes to persuade young, sharp-minded players to consider college.</p>
<p>A good poker player makes a great college student, argues Mr. Nesson, an expert on evidence who has appeared several times before the U.S. Supreme Court and who founded and co-directs Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society.

The organization (<a href="http://www.gpsts.org%5B/url%5D">http://www.gpsts.org</a>) is forming chapters at several universities, including Boston, Brown, Tufts, and Stanford. Next month it will hold a conference at Harvard Law School on the educational utility of the game and will begin a novel team play form of poker with inaugural head-to-head matches among Harvards, Yales, and other teams.
<p>I had a roommate in law school who had gone to Wisconsin his freshman year of college back in the 70s. A guy on his floor lost he entire balance of his bank account, including his tuition money, in a card game the first day of school. Some of the money was later refunded under pressure from the administration.</p>

While some schools may have poker clubs, weekly poker nights, and even large, freeroll poker events, students at universities such as Harvard, Yale, UCLA, and USC have been fortunate enough to join new chapters in one of the newest societies of poker: the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society. The focus of the Society has been to bring to academia the idea of poker as a game of skill and a teacher of life lessons. For students who love the game of poker and want to improve their knowledge and skill, plus understand why poker is skill and not luck, the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society is their answer.

The Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society already has chapters established or planned at Harvard, UCLA, Stanford, Carnegie-Mellon, Cornell, Michigan, Tufts, Indiana–South Bend, and George Washington, and is looking to establish chapters at many more schools. Although the GPSTS was just recently started, the growth and development of the program is a fast success. Students wanting to know if their school is already a chapter, or seeking information on how to start a chapter, should contact the GPSTS at gpsts.org for more information.
<p>I saw that Colbert Report...that was hilarious. I loved the idea to have the presidential candidates play a round of poker! You'd really see who's got a real poker face and how well they bluff.</p>
<p>Jesus Ferguson is a UCLA man, and last year's Player of the Year, Jeff Maddog Madsen, won two world series of poker bracelets and one runner up at the age of 21 and five weeks, winning 1.5M. He was a senior at UC Santa Barbara. So UCs are well represented.</p>
