Hi everyone, I have recently applied to Syracuse and was wanting to know about the political climate. Syracuse checks all the boxes in what I want in a school. Would you say that Syracuse is an accepting community for all political beliefs? After attending a high school with a heated political climate, I am concerned for college. How heated would you say Syracuse’s political climate at the moment?
You will find that the political atmosphere will differ across majors.
What does that even mean ‘accepting of all political views’? I mean, there is a lot of very scary stuff being said in this country right now. Things intelligent people SHOULD be speaking out about. Heated debate on college campuses is a good thing. Do you really want to go somewhere where your ideas will never be questioned because nobody wants to rock the boat? I mean I am assuming you aren’t expecting to raise your hand in a biology class, deny climate change and have nobody object? You know that’s not realistic right? If you are in a pre-Med class and you say that there is a link between vaccines and autism you do know the teacher is going to use empirical evidence to shoot you down right? I could go on but hopefully you get the idea.
So, when you say ‘accepting of all political beliefs’ I am really going to have to stop you there and ask you to be more specific. Thanks.
I would not consider your two examples to be political views. I am not sure what they should be classified as, perhaps just ignorance but not political? I would think a political view would be something like immigration.
Gotcha! But my question stands: It’s an important discussion. There are both valid and xenophobic/bigoted arguments to be had. The university is educating the future leaders of this nation. Don’t you want to go to a college where that dialogue takes place? Don’t you want new voters to be well informed on the issues they are voting on? Most college freshmen arrive at school fully agreeing with their parents’ politics. These poly sci discussions aren’t meant to brainwash you. They are meant to inspire reflection and broaden your point of view. The ability to consider opposing viewpoints is a key skill required for adulting.
@JerseyMom2022 I am more asking about the quality of conversation and the climate related to that. It is important that there is a debate and conversation, however, I am concerned about the way it is being conducted. Is the conversation done in a respectful manner? Is the climate at the moment hateful? As you have seen across the country, opposing viewpoints have been met with violence. I am worried about that potentially happening, after attending a high school where there is so much vitriol and hatred. Does that make sense?
Yes. That absolutely makes sense. It’s a very good question. May I message you?
