Political Science/Economics Internships at JHU

Hello all,

I was reading through the threads on CC about internships and research opportunities available through JHU, and I found that almost everything written was about engineering or science. I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight into the liberal arts side of internships and research. I am looking at studying political science and economics, so any responses geared in that direction would be greatly appreciated.

If you decide to do International Relations then they have a special program for DC internships if I remember correctly. Also the US-China council likes to recruit from JHU alot for summer internships.

It’s very common/easy. I interned at think tanks, NGO’s, for legistlatures, and for a philanthropic consulting firm, all while living in Baltimore as DC is just a commute away.

Were these internships available for you as a freshman? sophomore? How did you find out about them?

Also, were those internships paid? Did you find yourself doing meaningful work, or were you merely fetching coffee and filing papers?

JHU econ / poli sci is just as well as known and highly regarded as its science programs.

I understand Hopkins’s geographic location as well as the quality of its academic programs. However, I was hoping for specific insight as to the nature of internships that Hopkins students studying poli sci and econ have taken. Thank you for all of your posts regardless!

how did I find out about them? The internet, jhu career services, connections at JHU (professors etc).
I don’t believe there are many paid internships in DC for anyone these days–even college graduates. Before the economy crashed mine was paid, since then, not so much.
Internships, by their very nature, are always a mix of fulfilling things and gruntwork.
I hope you understand my need to keep my answers vague.

If you can, look to New York. A lot of internships in New York, especially in economics/finance are paid (if you can get one!). These may require some work, though.
