So I'm not an applicant or a freshman (actually I'm a junior) but I wanted to take a moment to encourage those of you who are planning on majoring in the humanities and/or social sciences to think about research down the road. Research is most certainly not limited to the hard sciences and just because we don't use test tubes doesn't mean we can't do original work!

There is a lot of very exciting work being done in all our departments from political science to history to anthropology and even philosophy! By all means, take advantage of the wonderful opportunities Hopkins offers and get involved in something about which you are passionate. You don't have to be a graduate student to get involved so keep it in mind, maybe not freshman year since you'll be doing your introductory work still getting adjusted by if you get excited about a field, you should go for it. New work is being done in all these fields and at a high level by our incredible faculty so seek them out.

If you have specific questions about what kind of things are going on in various departments feel free to ask here or in PM. Personally I'm a double major in philosophy and anthropology, but I've done things in political science/IR too.

Get inspired!
