I absolutely love Barnard- location, its vibe, and etc. However, I am a little hesitant, because I have not come across anything that has lauded their pol sci/econ department.
Any input would be greatly appreciated :)

My d. was a poli sci major. What questions do you have?

One thing that was really cool is that I am always seeing Barnard poli sci profs quoted in the media on various issues – often profs that my d. had.

Also, the Barnard President, Debora Spar, has a background in politics, international affairs & economics.

My d. was primarily interested in international affairs and didn’t actually take any econ courses while at Barnard.

thank you for getting back to me- actually, I am also very interested in international relations, but I think Barnard doesn’t offer that major (correct me, if I am wrong)
did your daughter take most of her pol sci classes in Columbia or does Barnard, itself have a good pol sci program?

Barnard doesn’t offer an IR major, but international relations course are offered as one of the subfields within the poli sci dept; it is also possible for students to enroll in courses at SIPA. My d. took all of her poli sci classes at Barnard – Barnard & Columbia maintain separate poli sci departments, and though classes at Columbia can be taken to fulfill elective requirements for the major – my daughter opted not to do so. She filled some of the elective requirements for the major while studying abroad. I think the intro level courses, colloquia & senior seminar need to be taken at Barnard. My d. took political theory with Dennis Dalton, but he has since retired.
