Political Science or Economics at Penn State

I am a high school senior interested in attending Penn State next year, and am undecided between Political Science and Economics as a major. I might be open to taking two majors, or majoring in one and minoring in the other.

I was wondering if any current students could tell me their experiences with the majors, and whether or not it was easy to keep a good GPA in these majors.

Thanks in advance.

why would you want to major in economics in this economy?
economy at pennstate was moved to the liberal arts school, so that tells you a little about the major ha
actually, economy is a very popular minor, i dont know any numbers, but i do have a lot of friends minoring in it.
if i were you, i would major is political science and minor in econ, since that seems to be a smarter and more popular track

thanks for the advice…That is what I was leaning towards anyway, so I think that may be my plan…

I’m an econ major and I don’t think Oscar’s advice makes any sense. Economists don’t get paid based on how well the economy does. If anything, the weakening economy has caused a higher demand for economists with new ideas. And the reason it is being moved from the business school is because econ isn’t really a business major- it’s slightly related if you want them to be (all business students should know some econ but not all econ students need business). The reason it’s in liberal arts is because economics is a social science. It’s in the liberal arts college at pretty much any other school.

As far as the program, it’s pretty solid. It really depends on you’re thoughts about the subject. Economics is very objective and different schools take different approaches. Penn State seems relatively moderate and the professors I’ve had so far have been pretty decent. The people i know who are political science majors don’t seem to think that there is much opportunity in the field. What do you really do with it? Become a politician? Maybe I’m biased because I’m in the econ department, but I haven’t heard great things about the political science classes.

and that’s why I was considering double majoring the first place

ARGH

its so tough to figure out what to do haha

Take classes for each major and then you can decide which one you want to major/minor in. Changing never hurts. Most people change their minds.

He’s right, there’s really no need to worry about it right now. You won’t declare your major until your junior year, so if you just take one class for each subject each semester until you decide, it will be fine.
