Is there anyone who is/has been in the program? I'd like to know more about it, but google isn't helping very much. I know it's very highly ranked, but what makes it so great? How are classes? How big are they? What kind of opportunities are offered there AND after graduation? Thanks!

Nick, Political Science is a very popular major. As such, you can expect large classes, particularly at the 100 and 200 levels. That’s the case at most universities. I know Political Science classes at Columbia, Cornell and Harvard that have 300+ students in them.

What makes Michigan’s Political Science department so strong is a combination of faculty and curriculum. Many Michigan professors are considered authorities in their subject matter and routinely shuttle from Ann Arbor to DC to advise the government on policy. The curriculum has been developped over decades and is one of the deepest and broadest to be found anywhere.

As far as opportunities go, most Political Science majors either go on to Law School, although many work for government and some pursue graduate studies in Political Science and end up working in academia.

I am a recent poli sci grad. I had classes with several hundred people in them, and a few with less than 12. The classes are interesting, a lot of them are very discussion based-- even if they’re huge-- and you can expect to do a lot of reading and writing. I graduated with very strong reading, writing, and analytical skills that I was able to market toward a variety of different industries. I’ve ultimately landed in insurance for my first job, as I elected not to actually go into government right now. You can do a lot of different things with this degree if you know how to work the skills you’ll hone to your advantage.
