Political science???

I'm thinking of majoring in political science. I was wondering if anyone knew of any hidden gems for the PS major. Please no ivy league schools.

I'm going to FSU... I think it is pretty good, many good profs... Top 40 undergrad, Top 10 Grad... low tuition, plenty of internship work since you are in the state capital.

GWU, American, Georgetown are all in DC so there are probably good internship opportunities there.

I thought all the DC ones were pretty obvious and high ranked?

University of Minnesota

BTW, I don't think DC area schools are "hidden gems," as the OP was inquiring.

Georgetown is seconded.

JHU is supposed to have a great International Relations program.

MIT (maybe not for the OP but for others) is ranked highly for Poli Sci.

OP, try looking into your own state school. It may be the hidden gem (and for a cheap price!) that you are looking for ;)

I'm majoring in international and comparative politics at the American University of Paris. The professors are top notch (I have a few that have worked in NATO, for example. One current one is constantly talking about how he's "rubbed shoulders" with some of the high-end government official... last time he was talking about Sarkozy - in France that's probably a bigger thing than in the States, but still...). The student body is international as are the faculty. Many of the teachers have been educated at Ivies in the US or Oxbridge in England and the equivalent prestigious "name" schools around the world. I worked with UNESCO last summer and that wouldn't have come without my connections from the school. There are a lot of workshops that come each semester with people that work in NGOs and governments (last week, I saw a seminar with a Kuwaiti official and another one with an Israeli politician and Palestinian journalist who had formed a peace coalition and came to speak to us about the Gaza situation). It's not a cheap school but there IS financial aid and many of my friends are on full. Quite frankly, I feel it's worth the price.

Florida State University

Got to go with Florida State for political science. See here for one reason, and here for more reasons.

Good luck!

Yeah... but then you have to live in Florida...

(Maybe I'm biased because I grew up there, but I just had to get out. Can't stand the heat nor the close-minded people...)

hmmm... Maybe you won't believe me, but the University of Arizona has a great program. I'm majoring in it also.

Tallahassee is not like the rest of Florida. It actually has seasons and it gets pretty cold during in the winter. I also think there are close-minded people all over the world, it's not just a Florida thing.

Yes, there are definitely close-minded people no matter where in the world you are. However, I think that there are certain locations that tend to have a higher percentage of them than others....

Where I'm from in Florida got "seasons" too. The coldest it would get was probably about 30 in the winter. I liked winter there, but the summers are just unbearable (that's when I usually go back now, too). You start sweating even if you're not doing anything outside and everywhere you go MUST have A/C. Some people like that I suppose, but I really don't enjoy it unless I'm at the beach, which would be rarely...

wow I never knew about FS. Thanks!

Any other ideas?

forgot to say that at my school, a lot of the kids end up working with the UN or going to some good grad schools, and/ or law.
