POLL: What should val/sal speech have or not have

im writing the salutatorian speech but i dont want it to be boring and full of cliche .... if u were listening to a speech, what would interest you and not bore you to death??? ... please help!

It should not be too long. 8-10 mins is long enough

It should reflect the achievements of all of the students, not be a bragfest for the salutatorian

It should include some highlights of the class's high school experience

It should end on an upbeat note.

It should also express appreciation for the teachers, administrators, parents and guardians who helped students along the way.

Best of luck with your speech!

Please please please don't spend 15 minutes talking about how your Aunt Jemima's rose garden made you realize how important and "rose-like" life is. It's already bad enough if people have to sit through a huge graduating class (if that's your case)!

i am having trouble writing my valedictorian speech. I am trying to make it funny and entertaining -- poke little harmless jokes at the teachers and administrators :) Nobody wants a boring speech.

"poke little harmless jokes at the teachers and administrators ?

Be careful with the above. I have heard from S's administrator that sometimes jokes that students genuinely think are fun and harmless are very hurtful to the adult recipients.

Make it short. Very short. Most val/sal speeches are bad, so the quicker they end, the better I like them.

thanks :)

...

make it provocative, rebellious, spiteful!

incite a revolution!

empower the student body!

implore them to rise up and swarm like a powerful hurricane!

give a speech for the ages!

give me liberty or give me death!

agitate! agitate!

Northstarmom: Well, the kinds of jokes I mean are as follows: One of my teachers says girls are dumb and guys are the best, but he just kids around. At the end of the speech, I wanted to say there are more girls up here than guys. :)

That joke would probably be OK. :)

it should use words that confuse the hell out of all the listeners

Don't forget to mention what future is laid for the graduating class.

I would say something like

To my fellow graduates, we made it. Do something good in your life. Be happy. Try hard. Don't quit. Have faith in yourself and in the people you care about. Good luck and I'll see you in 10 years at the reunion.
